Dear Daron Acemoglu, Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. We truly appreciate it. However, after waiting in anticipation, we feel that 30 minutes wasn't enough! We would love to hear more from you-perhaps even 30 hours-on a range of topics including AI, democracy, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and much more. Would it be possible for you to join us for a second talk with our host Bekzod? Thank you again for your valuable insights and time!

Daron is right: technological growth can lead to prosperity in all sense as long as it is deployed in the right direction, meaning that automation, driven by technological advances, should be applied with through consideration, coupled with creation of new tasks for high qualified future workers, ultimately making it more rightful and dearly for new generation. Technology -> balanced ideology -> prosperity Thank you for this short but fruitful conversation, Behzod aka 😊👍

This viewpoint above 👆🏽 is supported by many scholars and historians who argue that colonialism played a crucial role in the economic development of Western nations. Here are some points to consider: Colonialism and Economic Growth: 1. Resource Extraction: European powers extracted vast amounts of natural resources from their colonies, including precious metals, minerals, and agricultural products. This wealth was funneled back to Europe, significantly boosting its economies. 2. Labor Exploitation: The exploitation of labor, including slavery and forced labor, provided European countries with cheap or free labor, which greatly enhanced their economic productivity and growth. 3. Market Expansion: Colonies served as captive markets for European manufactured goods, ensuring a steady demand and facilitating industrial growth. 4. Infrastructure and Institutions: European countries built extensive infrastructure in their colonies primarily to serve their economic interests, which sometimes indirectly benefited the colonized regions but primarily facilitated the extraction of resources and the control over local economies. The Enlightenment and Scientific Growth: 1. Transfer of Knowledge: The translation of scientific and philosophical works from Islamic civilizations and other cultures played a significant role in the European Renaissance and Enlightenment. Scholars in the Islamic world had preserved and expanded upon the knowledge of ancient civilizations, and this body of knowledge was crucial for the intellectual development of Europe. 2. Intellectual Exchange: The interactions between Europe and other parts of the world, including the Islamic world, India, and China, brought new ideas, technologies, and knowledge that fueled European scientific and intellectual growth. Democracy and Institutions: 1. Selective Development: While democratic institutions and enlightenment ideals contributed to economic development, their impact was often selective and complemented by the economic advantages gained through colonial exploitation. 2. Economic Inequality: The benefits of economic growth in Europe were not evenly distributed and often came at the expense of the colonized populations who suffered significant social, economic, and political repression. Acknowledging the Full Picture: 1. Holistic View: Understanding the full picture of Western economic growth requires acknowledging both the contributions of internal developments such as the Enlightenment and the crucial role played by colonialism and exploitation. 2. Ethical Considerations: Recognizing the brutality and exploitation involved in colonialism is essential for a balanced historical perspective and for addressing historical injustices. In conclusion, while the Enlightenment, scientific growth, and the development of democratic institutions were important factors in Western economic growth, the exploitation and extraction of resources from colonized countries played a pivotal and often primary role. A comprehensive understanding of Western economic development must consider both these internal and external factors.

Western economists and economic thinkers often explain European economic growth from the late medieval ages to the modern period by emphasizing the Enlightenment, scientific advancements, and democracy. However, they frequently overlook or fail to acknowledge the significant role of colonialism, theft, and the exploitation of resources from colonized countries, as well as the brutality inflicted on the colonized people. I believe this aspect should be explored as one of the key drivers of Western economic growth. While I am not claiming that all economic growth resulted from colonization and exploitation, I argue that it was a primary factor, rather than the Enlightenment or so-called democratic institutions. Additionally, Western countries do not adequately explain how the Enlightenment occurred. They often neglect to recognize that it was through translating the knowledge and resources accumulated by Islamic civilization over the past 700 years that Europe was able to achieve the Enlightenment. Thank you.
