I was also a former Christian missionary and deconverted for similar reasons. I find it easier to stop thinking or talking about religion altogether. I live my life now as if I never was a Christian and as though Christianity and other religions don't exist. My family and relatives and former church friends know I'm an atheist. As soon as they start talking about religion, I change the subject to something else, usually music, which makes for better conversation. I also am not part of any in-person or online atheist or non-religious groups because that would still remind me that I used to be religious. Doing this gives me peace of mind. Once in a blue moon, I do listen to podcasts like this simply to hear of people that had similar experiences to me. But sometimes in order to move past an abusive relationship, it's better to forget you were in it.

Great interview. I can relate viscerally with Mary's foray into philosophy. It's the next best thing to living a good life. Hey Mary I recommend the book The Dream of Reason by Anthony Gottlieb. Better if you can get the audiobook.

I’ve heard from countless individuals that regret getting the covid jabs, who stopped getting more. And I've talked to hundreds that have had zero, and not even one regrets their decision. In fact, the vast majority agree that not participating in this is one of the best decisions that we’ve ever made in our lives.

The fact that the covid drugs quite obviously failed to offer immunity to anything, renders the term "anti vaxxer” moot.

While I accept the reasons for Matthew’s de conversion, yet I don’t see why the basis of the issue hangs on Creation OR Evolution. It is quite possible to believe in a God of Creation and to believe that he chose to create by an evolutionary process. To read the Genesis story literally is to misunderstand it. The Bible as a whole is a mixture of allegory ,( Genesis eg) history, ( Acts eg) poetry ( Song of Songs eg) and more.

I can see how a non believer could desire to be with a believe, but the other way around doesn’t seem to jive with most doctrine.

Alice, this interview seemed somewhat interesting to me. I was educated, very strictly, as a catholic, but my preceptor turned everything in hate, shame and suffering. I don't speak English very fluent and I understand almost nothing in the main of your appearances on the Net. I cannot all explain there. I am not exactly an atheist but I left christianity. I am refering to another tradition, very much more ancient than christianism. The one is very simple and giving scientific explanations to everything. I never do proselytism, and feel peaceful with the tradition that I am speaking about.

I see a problem with Christian science. While both can complete each other in certain ways, in the beneficially spiritual ways they work against each other. Can one become a religious atheist. Of course not, not in practice and theology. Practice of a spiritual mindset is non scientific, science is not religion although it can affirm some religious truths, such as archaeological findings and historical findings. Israel exists and has sites of the bible but this is confirmed by science, but does nothing to add spiritual value. Spiritual value comes from fellowship with Christ something, science never offers. The Holy Spirit is a force of nature which Jesus said the gospel of John, is like the wind. Science cannot explain the wind and why it blows in origin, and the winds purpose, yet it provides, enjoyment, comfort, and assistance in some ways. The Holy Spirit moves and goes and comes and is around supporting people all over the world, yet no one understands the wind or the Holy Spirit. The attributes of the Holy Spirit come to those who desperately seek Him in Jesus Christ.

To faithfully believe that OBJECTIVE morality, meaning, purpose, justice, value and/or goodness can even remotely exist without God (the personification of value and goodness etc), is a fanciful superstition. It’s akin to thinking we can create a new primary colour or Re-write the laws of mathematics or logic. Hence any faithful atheist / gullible humanist who foolishly (e.g pridefully) thinks that he/she can create objectively true meaning is vainly deluding THEMSELVES. May God grant them the wisdom to submit to His ways.

Oh to Linda say good as evil and evil is good in the last days there should be markers and there should be a falling away first and then the Antichrist will ruin rain for 3 and 1/2 years then Jesus will return and destroy the wicked with the brightness of his coming hallelujah are you one of those markers I pray not I pray that you repent and receive Jesus while you can he does know your heart,

This was a great listen. Thank you Michelle for coming on the podcast.. that is a huge support. I really treasured this conversation and maybe it will help me move forward to understand my family and who I left behind. Michelle... This podcast is very helpful, your hubby is doing a great thing by giving us a place and a voice and reminding us that we matter. Belief and unbelief is NOT a choice... We don't chose to do this to our family. With podcasts and conversations like this, there is a hope for finding common ground and peace in our relationships. Thank you so much!!!

The very notion that you have to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour to go to heaven is ludicrous. Not everyone has access to this book called the Bible and thus have no knowledge whatsoever of this Jesus fellow. So according to Christian belief, these ignorant people are going to HELL?????

This is one of my favorite deconversion stories. Ive never heard of an entire family deconverting by paying attention to the wisdom of a child. 💜 I remember at twelve the obviousness of something amiss with a lot of religious stuff. Saying anything about it didnt get the ear of as loving parent but instead the fundamentalist response. Which is entirely abuse. I wonder if Leahs son has any idea how lucky he is. Im sure his parents realise how lucky they are to have that child. Good job.

Hearing this, evangelicals are not better than muslims, pushing faith upon their kids, since they grow up inside that bubble...l am from Europe and born and raised roman catholic, but in a complete free non-pratiquant family, but atheist sincs forever, l am 55 now. God alledgedly gave people free will, than why is that not applicable on the faith yoh have or not? This is so hypocritical for me...

I became a Christian as an adult, and attend an orthodox reformed church, we don’t have special music, or a “light show”. Instead we consider worship to be very special, and enter into it respectfully. We have a single piano player, and sing psalms, like the early church. I believe you have been indoctrinated into another religion-atheism. So, you should consider your points for yourself!
