The A doesn't work well on my viola. I don't consider them all purpose string. They are thin and that definitely enhances overtones. The strings vibrate. They have improved over the years. I tried them when they first came out. People loved them but they had a BIG problem with unraveling. They corrected that. I wouldn't use them for certain repertoire though. As far as the C string goes, I don't think that they compare to Spirocore tungsten. I like a big atomic bomb on the C and Spirocore gives me that. I keep both in my case. Most use a Spirocore mittel but I use a stark. On my big viola it makes the other strings vibrate as well. Stark will not work on all instruments. The high tension can choke the sound on some instruments. Spirocore tungsten mittel is then a good option. The Larsen A and the Helicore A both have the same vibration quality but the Larsen is a bit darker giving the impression of a rounder sound that sings in the highest register instead of becoming nasal.

I think this settles the debate on whether the 16" standard is large enough to accommodate the lower frequencies. Too bad anything over 16" is too much for most of us mere mortals.

@@andrearchiecameron Electric Violas also benefit from the Joule. The Joule also works great on extended range Violas such as the 5 String Viola with a High E, and my good friend Chet Bishop makes awesome quality 5 String Violas.

@@andrearchiecameron I have a 5 string Acoustic-Electric Cello that I've restrung with Helicore strings which have a Stranded Steel Core and they're a bit thinner to make bowing on the Strings easier. I'm planning on getting a CodaBow Joule someday because I think it would allow me to get a nice crisp sound. I also found out that I should also get a Cellophant for it which makes holding the CodaBow Joule a bit easier by increasing the surface area of the frog.

On this recording I had Helicore on the 2 middle strings, Larsen A, and Spirocore C - tungsten. Helicores are great when they are new and have all those wonderful overtones that really carry well in auditoriums. After they lose that initial brilliance they still sound good and have an easy response. I prefer to change them close to an important concert or gig so I have all of the vibrant overtones.
@RockStarOscarStern6345 ай бұрын
@@andrearchiecameron Helicore strings on all the strings I find to be more piratical because especially on the 1st String (the High A String), having a Stranded Steel Core (like the other 3) softens the tone a little bit so that it doesn't sound quite as thin. Helicore strings are what we can call "All Purpose Strings" because they're for players of all levels, the thinner Gauge makes bowing on them a Breeze.

It makes bowing on the Viola just like Butter, because of how the weight is distributed
@andrearchiecameron2 жыл бұрын
It is not that heavy. The balance is different however. From my experience it gives a superb legato but also strong, firm attacks at the frog. It is GREAT for double stops.
@RockStarOscarStern6342 жыл бұрын
@@andrearchiecameron It's actually slightly heavier which makes bowing on the Viola (along with Medium Tension Helicore Viola Strings plus they also make a High E for 5 String Violas, Wittner composite tailpiece that doesn't have fine tuners, Wittner Chin rest and Wittner fine tune pegs along with a Stringing crank to crank them) like Butter.

Carbon fibre bows. I love them! A few years ago I went to Alberto Giordano's shop in Genoa,named my price and found that cheapest suited me best and made the best sound. It is a Carbondix ***. I now have three of them. My wooden bows are now redundant! Did you know that Paganini sometimes used a hollow steel bow made by Vuillaume?

Have you tried the Joule bow? For the viola, in my opinion, it rivals many great pernambuco bows. I tried it against a fine Ouchard bow and the sound quality was bigger and rounder. Like I said before, three violists in my orchestra have given up pernambuco for the Joule bow and last week a violinist also switched. For the price I do not know of a better bow. Sweet spiccato and a very easy smooth bow change with power all the way to the point even on a long down bow. Try a Joule!
