Awesome! I can’t believe you can dye objects…this ADHD brain is bursting with ideas - now it’s just implementing them. And remembering the reason i came here in the first place, haha: I have some jacquard style fabric (synchronicity!) embroidered trousers made of 35% cotton, 15% linen, and 50% polyester. They’re cream with gray flowers and I want them to be eg a cyan type colour. Apart from knowing which dye to choose, I have the issue that they’re meant to be washed at 30 degrees. I saw a tutorial about using both natural and poly, where only the natural showed. What do you suggest? 🙏
@jacquardproductsАй бұрын
So glad you found us! Since the fabric is a 50/50 poly/natural blend, we do recommend using both natural and poly dyes in the dyebath. Use similar colors for an even dye job, or completely different colors for a two-tone "heather" effect. (BTW, you could also probably dye the embroidery a different color from the fabric, depending on what type of fiber those threads are made with). For good color, you will definitely need to get it hotter than 30C, but with these fabrics, even a full boil shouldn't be an issue. To be safe, it will be best to bring the temp slowing up and then slowly down--this is the best way to avoid shrinkage. Let us know how it goes!
@AriElfynАй бұрын
@@jacquardproducts thank you so much for responding - I wasn’t expecting it - and so quickly! I truly appreciate it. And the detail! Oooh, that’s interesting about the embroidery…seeing as I don’t know, it’ll be fun to see how they come out…I’ll definitely go for two different colours, but make sure they’re complementary and that I like both equally seeing as I don’t know yet what the results will be. I will let you know! Thank you so much again -What a wonderful channel! 🩵

@jacquardproductsАй бұрын
No, it is a unique chemistry, not the same as cyanotype. The process is similar to cyanotype, but SolarFast has very different properties--for example, SolarFast prints on fabric may be laundered normally, and it is available in 14 different colors (which may also be blended to create many more).

@jacquardproducts2 ай бұрын
The SolarFast Wash is especially good at capturing and washing away the undeveloped dye after exposure. It isn't strictly necessary, it just works better than other detergents. That said, a normal detergent should work well, too, just be sure to use plenty of hot water.

Once you've coated your paper, how long can you store it before exposung it to sunlight for it to still work? (Keeping it in a dark box)
@jacquardproducts2 ай бұрын
If stored in a dry dark place, it should last at least several weeks or months. It may oxidize and start turning blue, but should still work well (just may require a longer rinse). If the environment is humid or hot, that may shorten the shelf life of the coated paper. Hope this helps!

Super helpful! I'm going to try dyeing my dog's harness with this. It's a light blue, and I want it to be navy. It's my old dog's harness (he passed 2 years ago), and it's dear to me, plus a really good model that isn't being produced anymore. I'm getting a new puppy and I thought of brightening up the harness for him. Luckily I have two pairs so I can test this out with the one I don't care so much about! But I'm confident this will turn out great.

Apricot to grey? Blue? Purple? Brown? Im trying to cool down the apricot
@jacquardproducts4 ай бұрын
Whenever you are trying to "neutralize" and grey out a color, the best place to start is to dye it the color opposite on the color wheel. The opposite of apricot on the color wheel is probably a warm blue, so over-dyeing with the iDye Poly Blue or Lilac is probably your best bet.

Can you tell me what wavelength of UV lightbulb will work best for this? I work opposite hours of the sun being out so I haven’t been able to try this more than once in the past two weeks. Thank you!
@jacquardproducts4 ай бұрын
The best light source we have ever tested is a 400W blacklight called the Eliminator EBK. It works great because it puts out a wide band of UV and gets hot. Heat during exposure (like simulated sunlight) can make a big difference, which is why UV LED lights aren't always the best option for SolarFast.

I have made several prints using a tanning bed for exposure. Exposure times from 1 minute 30 to 2 minutes give reasonable results. The prints lack some contrast. What factors can I optimize to give the print higher contrast? I am using high % cotton paper and apply the negative when the SolarFast is just about dry but still I see some shimmer, indicating the fluid hasn't dried completely. I use are non UV absorbing glass plate to press the negative and paper.
@jacquardproducts4 ай бұрын
A longer exposure will probably give you deeper color development. Just make sure you negative is nice a opaque so you get good contrast in the print.

@jacquardproducts5 ай бұрын
@@supersaiyanyoshi1175 Yes, the green and yellow dyes come out of the bottle yellowish. After exposure, the yellow areas should wash out leaving a green and white print. That is why good washing technique is extra important wit those colors. They are a bit more challenging to use compared to the colors that come out of the bottle more or less colorless. Just use lots of hot water and soak the fabric, changing the water periodically, to remove the undeveloped yellow color.

@@supersaiyanyoshi1175 The green colors do come out of the bottle a yellow/orange color. After exposure, you should see a green and yellow image, and then the yellow areas should wash out to white.
