Excellent Lecture. D. M. Is probably taken from the Latin inscription on tombstones going back to the Roman period. It is the standard start to the funerary inscription. It means Diis Manibus. This refers to the Gods of the Underworld or Divine Dead. "To the Chthonic gods...." Christian inscriptions continued to use it.
