Nice video production! I've watched it 3x. Takes me back to when I lived up S Brookforest, introduced RWGPS to TE, and rode this often, either from Bergen or from home.

@@MichaelAhlers Living now in Oregon. 2015 was a 10,000 mi year. Then following a low speed but bone shattering skid in 2016 (in TX) three episodes of submassive pulmonary embolisms reduced my lung function to the point where I was sedentary and on O2 in Evergreen. Never crash a bike, particularly when you're old. Glad we got to live there for the first 7 years of our retirement. I can change planes at DIA but overnight, even in the valley, would require O2. Managing membership for a bike club out here now.

@@rphandler, oh, that's rough… going from that much volume to needing support. Sigh. I'm so sorry, man, but I'm glad you got to live it up while you were here. Thanks for sharing, and, uh, I'll try to keep the rubber side down for the rest of this season. (Already broke two wheels this summer. Derp.)

Hey Michael, I just stop by here to say hello and give you congratulations for this epic ride. Once again It was nice to meet you at the previous day in the park and ride and on the event day when you pass me in Idaho Springs. I hope one day you can come down to the flatlands of Houston and ride with the Handlebar Cycling Club and meet some other Brazilian riders. See you bro.

Prof Bartlet forgets that exponential growth in the real world eventually tops off and then in many cases starts to decline. I've known about the S curve since university in the 1980s. Population growth does not follow exponential growth in the long term, otherwise, we would all be swimming in bacteria. His arguments are interesting but somewhat outdated. And I can't believe that he never heard of the S curve. Boulder Colorado metro population was 280K on 2000 and is 330k in 2023 without them having to resort to any of his dire suggestions. Only people with an agenda believe that population growth will follow the exponential function. He does make some good points, but the history of the past 20 years has shown that there are more possible solutions than the one he proposes. His predictions about the availability of fossil fuel reserves have been proven not correct. And yes, I can think of a situation where a large population is better. The potential economic benefits arise from people and not oil. That is the main reason why the economy of China will become the largest in the world. One of the main concern of Chinese policy makers now is that their population is not growing fast enough. But I like his multiply by 70 method.

Have you considered that the economic factor of people to afford a home in boulder may influence how the increase in the area has moderated. He did mention that on the 2 column chart there are things that accelerate human growth and things that decelerate growth. The ability to afford a resource whether a home or a gallon of fuel will impact many people. Wages for many people are usually less than inflation. The most important thing that Dr. Bartlett was trying to convey is that people need to wake up and debate and discuss how to pilot the ship. They said that the Titanic was unsinkable. How did that turn out. Lifeboats aren't the best answer . Maybe avoid the sinking alltogether.

There are very few people that do something that makes the whole world a better place. Maybe if we weren't so selfish and stop killing all the unborn children we would already have the answer to all the questions you are asking.

Why shouldn't we be having the answers already? I mean, we are close to being 8 billion people on earth. How many people are needed to get those "answers" a.k.a. "solutions" you are talking about.

@15:35 I'm not sure he's right about those good things lowering the birth rate. Lowering mortality along with education for girls actually lowers the birth rate. Public health, sanitation, peace, law and order all do more to lower the birthrate than they do to raise the mortality rate. Look at just about all western countries, they mostly all have birthrates lower than what is necessary to replace the population.

Could there be more than a couple of 100k views of Al Bartlett’s lectures and interviews on KZbin? Suppose the same people that in many cases have looked at the different ones (I have looked at this lecture a couple of times). Then there are a fraction of that who have clicked “Like”. Like this, just short of 4k views and 82 likes. H. L. Mencken was spot on, “it is the nature of the human species to reject what is true but unpleasant and to embrace what is obviously false but comforting”.

I never saw such a statement of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the overpopulation problem -- recognizing overpopulation as a huge problem in our world and even in the United States. Good for Dr. King to have spoken out against stupid mindless baby-making. If only the Pope and Muslim Ayatollahs would do the same -- but they won't, because their religions and religious goals benefit from over population.

I have to comment again, toward the end of the video Prof. Bartlet comments about some "Dr. Julian Simon," and the writings and comments of the so-called "Dr. Julian Simon," that "copper can be made from other metals" and "we can derive energy from other suns." I would hope that Dr. Simon was talking about fusion, which is not practical as we have found over the last 30 years or so of research into the matter. However, I fear Dr. Simon is just another, what I call, "fake PhD," handed a degree he or she did not earn. What is most shocking is that this Dr. Simon was teaching in a purportedly prestigious University of Illinois, and teaching what are "science" classes (i.e. economics and business -- with "economics" being pretty much a "hard" science, business being more of a "soft" science, but far more "hard" than a social science which is not very scientific at all, and it is in the soft sciences that I expect to find such incredibly wrong understandings of physics and the nature of matter and energy). But the government is corrupt, and the University of Illinois is run by the Illinois government, and so is a corrupt institution to at least some extent. Fake PhD's like the so-called Dr. Simon will find their way into the education system, because they have friends, family, and influence that will get them such jobs "teaching" college classes. For the most part students read from well developed text books that are fact checked, so not a huge problem learning even if a dope like the so-called "Dr." Simon is teaching a class. But this brings me to an important point - CORRUPTION. Systems break down over time without putting in the required energy to maintain the integrity of the original system. A corrupt government will not shunt the needed energy to maintain the integrity of systems, like the education system (or like infrastructure, etc.), because the corrupt governments we have are run by "politicians," who are not wise or ethical, but are crooks. And these crooks get into office by appealing to the stupidity of the population. (I ran for public office, trying to inform people of corruption in local government and in the state government, and I got lots of people agreeing with me, but, ultimately, they all voted for those that appealed to the vices of the voters -- making me think that the state and national economies are going to collapse, and fairly soon.) Anyway, Dr. Simon is probably well connected to the politicians, and the politicians helped him get a job "teaching" at the University of Illinois, that is, the teaching position was not "earned," but was handed over to this dunce. Even more shocking is that it appears that Dr. Simon was published in the "Science" journal?!!! Wow! even the super prestigious "Science" journal is a fraud to such an extent that they would publish anything written by a charlatan like Dr. Simon. Clearly, Dr. Simon has friends, and the "Science" journal, and probably every other publication, and especially newspapers, are not reliable sources of information. However, I would say that you can get some good information out of scientific journals and newspapers, but that we must already know "science" and every other subject pretty well in order to filter what we read. Frankly, KZbin is becoming just as good of a source of information as such paper and ink sources of information. (Yeah, lots of nonsense on KZbin, but lots of great and accurate information too, you just have to be able to figure out what is nonsense and what is valid information on your own -- not trusting others to do this for you. If you know the principles of "logic" and can follow an argument and recognize facts as opposed to "opinions," you can really learn a lot on KZbin -- just look at this very highly educational video on Arithmetic, Population, and Energy as an example.)

Albert A. Bartlett is one of my heroes. I add that I run into "technological optimists" all the time; the "they will figure it all out for us, so don't waste a minute thinking about it" true believers. These are typically (virtually always) very religious people, or very distracted ("let's party") people.
@theultimatereductionist75926 жыл бұрын
I hate sounding pessimistic to technological optimists, because I AM a technological optimist. But I temper that feeling with critical thinking, reminding myself that technology is necessary but not sufficient, we need violent military overthrow of the status quo.

Or economists, that’s one of a kind breed in this field. I believe in growth, in sensible definition of the term. That we with more knowledge can make it easier and easier to fulfill human needs. If it needs depleting finite resources, it’s not sensible. If we then use the increased room for production to uncontrolled population growth and/or produce unnecessary nonsense that destroy and deplete our environment it’s not sensible. But nature will take care of our insensible growth mania. There, present times neoliberal economic model will help, we are with help of that on fast track to a new dark age which will lessen the possible resistance to natures correction of insensible human growth mania.
