Shouldn’t be doing this type of training. Why would you be shooting if the dog isn’t watching something drop/retrieving? Not efficient training. You need to build his drive while doing gunfire. Have someone throw a bird/dummy in the distance. Secondly, this isn’t a German shorthair pointer. It’s a Chocolate lab. I have both.

There might be some variability with the timber calls as they’re hand made and each timber has different acoustic qualities. Also depends how you blow them. The sound clips were provided by the maker himself blowing the call 👍 🦆

Hey mate we used this online based program: blueprintshop.net/product-page Don’t know any vic based dog trainers that specifically train for deer 🦌 hunting but do know a few good local trainers that can put you on your way. Hit us up on our website if you want an intro. Cheers 👍 gundoggear.com.au

You can get it here: gundoggear.com.au/product/glow-in-the-dark-diy-longline-guy-rope/ Hard to say how long it stays lit as it depends on how much direct sunlight / light it’s exposed to. But I’d say between 2-3 hrs on full glow from what we’ve seen.

How do you deal with possibility and risk of dogs finding 1080?
@HuntingWithGundogs
@HuntingWithGundogs Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question mate. I subscribe to the Wild Dog Management Program baiting newsletter that the relevant government department issues whenever it has a planned baiting coming up. Then avoid those areas. I also usually hunt the dog up close so if he starts investigating something, he’s close enough for me to see it. Obviously if you’re hunting with your dog out away from you that would be difficult, but this is not a hunting style we’re used to. I’ve heard others muzzle their dogs so that they can’t physically get to the 1080 if they encounter it. 1080 is something I am very wary about, can’t be too careful. Would love to hear yours or others’ methods of avoiding 1080 out in the bush.

Just keep pointing to where the dummy lands over and over. He eventuality understood that I’m telling him where it landed. Then he follows his nose.

We didn't mate, we started with a wooden clapper at a 20m-30m distance, then gradually reduced the distance. Then we went to the local gun club car park and sat there for about 10mins. After that we moved to firing live .22 gunfire, again at a distance and gradually reducing that distance as the dog became indifferent to the noise. Once we were comfortable that he was rock solid, we moved to the .308 and what you're seeing there is a distance of about 5m-7m and the dog was behind the muzzle. As you can see he was excited but not phased. Always open to feedback as we're not dog trainers (just gundog enthusiasts raising and training our own gundog) so keen to learn better methods. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Haha that dog does not look like this is the first time that it has heard gunfire. It is very confident, I'd suspect he has done a bit of work prior to the 308.

@HuntingWithGundogs Жыл бұрын
@@Jesse-jj6qk you’re spot on! We did a heap of conditioning work with a wooden clapper at varying distances getting closer each time. Then moved on to .22LR rifle also at varying distances. What you’re seeing here is the first exposure to .308 rifle fire 👍
