I can’t see the point of a video looking out of the windscreen for its entire length. Surely what is interesting about a ride in such a car, is watching the controls in action, the column gear change, and the instruments? Seeing at what speed the gears are changed and getting a feel for driving the car?

The Somerset was the car I always promised myself as a small boy, but when the time came to learn to drive I was weaned on the Morris Minors, and after 60+ years I still think that Moggies have a character all of their own. Sorry Somersets, you're lovely cars still, but............

Unusual colour for one of these. Most seem to be black or, like mine, grey. I've also seen some in pale blue, pale green or cream. Even with just 42bhp they seem to go very well and are full of character and charm. The body and chassis are made of such heavy guage steel that they seem to survive remarkably well.

In 1953 Austin did a range of colours for the Coronation. My Somerset was Buckingham Green (a light green'/grey). There was also Sandringham Beige, Windsor Grey, Balmoral Blue - and I think Coronation Cream.

Thanks! So, if you take the bonnet right off the car there’s no longitudinal stay underneath? That’s interesting because my car has vacant holes in the radiator frame and on the bulkhead with witness marks from bolts that used to be there. My car is September 1938 build by the frame & body numbers and is fairly original but I’ve struck several features on it which don’t belong, maybe the cowl stay is one… Good luck with your project, there’s a bit of info around if you look hard, but don’t forget the engine, clutch and gearbox are fundamentally different to the earlier ones😊 You look to have the fitted luggage case too

My car was bought 26/05/1939 with frame number N 41929 is it possible to find out when it was produced ?.
@RB-qq1ky
@RB-qq1ky Жыл бұрын
@@LBLRestorationAndDriving Yes, it should be possible. On the bulkhead there should be an aluminium plate with "Please quote Car No:" on it, and on that plate there should be a number like <FRA xxxxx> where xxxxx is a number. FRA is the code for the Goodwood (14-6) model. Stay tuned, I'll Post a list of features vs frame numbers on here (next couple of days) as soon as I dig out my notes. They'll give you a reasonable idea. I've read that Austin records of that era aren't too accurate so we won't be able to find the exact day 🙂. Once you get around to cleaning up a bit, the engine block, gearbox case and rear axle housing are stamped with their own individual assembly dates.

@@LBLRestorationAndDriving I'm not sure what happened to my reply from the other day😕? Here it is again: From “The Motor Trader” dated March 1,1939. Reprinted as “Trader Service Data No.59” Its worth getting a copy of this, they often pop up on auction sites and its the closest you'll get to a service manual. @ Chassis #37627 (November 1937): Aluminium cylinder head & Split type valve cotters introduced @ Chassis#39592 (Aug.1938): Radiator overflow relief valve, pistol grip handbrake & positively lubricated road springs introduced. Piston type shock absorbers supersede previous vane type. @ Chassis #40317 (Sept.1938): Borg & Beck style (multi-spring) clutch introduced. Pull knob & wire cable replaces starter solenoid (push button starter) @ Chassis #40422 (Oct.1938): Bishop cam type steering gear (fully shim adjusted) supersedes hourglass worm type . Thomson self-adjusting tie rod ends introduced (previous type was adjustable for wear). I cant find any information on any changes post 1938. Goodwood sales figures had largely dropped off by late '38 (the production run was only ~20 000), new models were in the pipeline, and the UK declared war 3 September 1939, so I guess not much of significance was done. Wyatt's book 'The Austin 1905-1952', which is a company history, gives 2,750 Goodwoods for 1938 and only 849 for 1939-1940 I have seen a (RHD) “1939” Goodwood advertised that had the pistol grip handbrake handle between the gear lever and the steering column, not between the steering column and the drivers door so who knows...? For instance, my car is #40145, has push button starter, but has the later type clutch. And the gearbox is date stamped October 1938. Can't tell if they're original or updates done some time in the last 85 years. Late edit: Longbridge (the Austin assembly plant in the UK) definitely kept records of every car produced. I've only ever seen the Austin Seven ones, which are apparently safely archived. I suspect the other ones may have been discarded at some stage. Wyatt says as much in the Appendices to his book.

I own one of these late model Goodwoods! Any chance of a good look at the longitudinal brace bar that goes between the bulkhead and the radiator cowl (under the bonnet hinge) particularly how it’s attached at each end? Its been missing on my car for years, I need to fabricate one and it’s different to the early model ones. Thanks!
