When doing the eye exam, if the patient is wearing contacts, do they have to take them out or can they keep them in?

It is best to remove contacts to best assess the eyes, especially when using fluorescein stain. This is an orange dye that goes into the eye, which will then be examined under blue light to look for foreign body or corneal abrasion/ulcer. Soft contact lenses can absorb the dye and be permanently stained.

Hi! Great question! The answer is BOTH! Urologists and primary care providers alike are trained to perform these exams when indicated. If the patient presents with a complaint of pain/discomfort in the area, a thorough genitourinary exam would help to rule out/rule in certain pertinent diagnoses.

Nice instructive video. 17:23 I believe the Doctor switched up L5 and S1 L5: responsible for dorsiflexion of the foot => heel walking S1: responsible for plantar flextion of the foot => toe walking While it's true that S1 provides cutaneous sensation to the calcaneous, the test performed is for motor function. Just wanted to clarify in case someone misunderstood

Excellent clinical demonstration. However, most male patients might be uncomfortable with such an exam. What protocols might alleviate such concerns for male patients?

You are right in that male patients may feel uncomfortable with such an exam; however, most are reassured by the fact they are in a medical setting with a trained professional who has performed these physicals several times. Also knowing that it is for their health and wellbeing, they will likely cooperate. Patient comfort and privacy is of utmost importance and as health care providers, we ensure that in addition to consent and communication every step of the way!
