Eisenhower sent two divisions as the sacrificial lambs for the Omaha beach assault. The 1st Infantry Division, which is the all time premier US infantry unit to lead the way of which they were of average age of early 20s. He also sent the 28th infantry division, a green division consisting of 19 year old boys to spearhead the treacherous assault on the Dog Green sector. The 1st Infantry Division was sent because they were the leaders of the entire army and had to lead by example. The 28th Infantry on the other hand was chosen because they knew nothing about the horrors of combat. Therefore they were the most suitable for a brazen assault against ferocious weapons where all other units would cower under heavy fire, on open and treacherous beach terrain.

I clucking hate Germans for killing us on the beaches of Normandy, Americans, Canadians, French and the British, but now we are attacking the nation that won the war, they lost over 15 million soldiers more than all of the allies combined, Putin a moderate leader asking to join NATO was rebuffed, why? because NATO would be obsolete and the USA needs war and an enemy

@@Darkmage50 This one isn’t super accurate either Like the Atlantic wall is a literal wall which wasn’t the case . And veterans have said saving private Ryan is more authentic
@Darkmage5026 күн бұрын
@@rupertsmith5815 veterans have said the same about the longest day as well. It looks exactly like the footage
@rupertsmith581526 күн бұрын
@@Darkmage50 well I mean they used real footage. And no Stuff like sword beach are very accurate Omaha beach not so much Plus the complete lack of blood and obvious fake gun sounds take away from the authenticity. You can make the argument longest day is more accurate. However saving private Ryan is way more authentic

The sad thing was that infantry units had immigrated from national guard units and these units recruited and trained ed groups of men using the buddy system. So that you had several men from the same town fighting and dying in the same infantry company.

Why did no US tanks go ashore with the infantry?
@mikearmstrong84832 ай бұрын
Most of the amphibious tanks were swamped in the rough seas.
@tungstenkid22712 ай бұрын
@@mikearmstrong8483 Yes, firstly DD tanks were a crap design and secondly the crews should have been trained better. Beats me why the planners didn't just launch tanks straight onto the beach from TLC's (Tank Landing Craft)
@mikearmstrong84832 ай бұрын
@@tungstenkid2271 The DDs worked well in testing, however that testing was done on a lake. When it came time for the invasion they ended up being launched from too far offshore, so as to avoid exposing the ships that carried them to artillery fire. 1 DD did make it ashore at Omaha, and under a better sea state several went ashore at Utah. The reason tanks weren't landed directly on the beach was because the craft (actually called LCTs, for Landing Craft, Tank) was again because of exposure to fire. After the beach was secured, LSTs (Landing Ship, Tank) offloaded many tanks on the first day. Incidentally, LSTs were commonly called Large Slow Targets. To assist the infantry in the initial assault, about a quarter of the troops in the first waves were combat engineers.
@tungstenkid22712 ай бұрын
@@mikearmstrong8483 If I'd been in charge I'd have made sure plenty of tanks were unloaded from LST's straight onto the beach.

"The Longest Day" is, about the 2. World War, one of the best films! We see it all the years in cinema and tv. We must well admire all the people involved in this film and for all the men and even ladies who so well prepared and fought in the D-Day (06.06.1944) in the Allied Army, Navy and Air-Force, like God soldiers, against nazism so cruel tyranny, for the freedom, in order the democracy, our best respect and all the blessings from God! The beginning of the landing is a joke, the Americans didn't come ashore in boats, see Hein Severloh, the alleged beast of Omaha Beach.
@mikearmstrong84832 ай бұрын
The Beast of Omaha is a myth. There are many reasons why Severloh's claims were completely impossible. They were full of inaccuracies and inconsistencies, and contradict all records and evidence. Only whereaboos still believe that nonsense.

Props to Jean Servais (1910 - 1976) for how he played his scene as Contre-amiral Robert Jaujard. He clearly captured the balance of that sick feeling of having to give the order to fire on his homeland while also knowing that he had no other option.
@adrianparker-e9f4 ай бұрын
Just what effect the bombardment achieve ? After the battle was over it would be quite obvious where shells landed. Did ships fire at land targets only 'by sight' from the ship it's self ? or did they have aerial/ground spotters ? Or with the poor visibility, just compass bearings etc. ( Were the midget submarines marking the landing zones of use as a reference ?)

And to a greater degree by the Soviet Union. Despite the D-Day landings being the largest amphibious assault ever, 70% of the fighting was between Germans and Russians.

In the movie, the only tune the piper is heard playing is 'The Black Bear'. Bill Millin said Lord Lovat requested 'Highland Laddie' as they came ashore, and then he played 'Road To The Isles' while strolling up and down the beach.

At this point, Bradley seriously considered pulling out of dday and leaving the first three waves there. It was the Destroyer captains, legends that they were, who saved the day by nearly running aground and firing practically point blank into costal fortifications. This was THE pivotal moment of the battle.
