“Snagging for chinook salmon”. Their digestion shuts down in the rivers. Cool, you reeled in a big fish, but that’s not fly fishing. Zero skill.
@jayr7471Ай бұрын
“Flossing for chinook salmon” is more fitting. I’ve fished the salmon run for 20 plus years trying for steelhead amongst the salmon. They don’t eat (and can’t digest) or swipe out of aggression in the rivers when it’s a fly. They just don’t. Don’t take my word. Ask any fisheries biologist or look it up on KZbin. Sorry, it’s just not skillful at all. If you want to feel good about reeling in a big fish, cool. Just don’t pretend it’s actual fly fishing. Catch a brown or steelhead when the salmon are running, now that’s video worthy.

Thanks so much Jaap!! And I have a question. I couldn’t get a good result with chartreuse color flies in my experience. But many anglers prefer to that. Of course I have a confidence with the Pink or Black and Blue. When you choosing a chartreuse flies?? If you like tell me your opinion.
@skeenariverflysupply8030Ай бұрын
@TezukuriLure Thanks! I use chartreuse mostly for fresh fish, that are moving into the system and are not staged yet. For those fish I find chartreuse or natural white/grey flies the best. With lots of flash to imitate baitfish. For low light conditions or fish that have been fished over I like black or black/blue/purple. When fish are staged I like an "aggressive" colour, like pink/orange. Hope that helps!

Caught King Salmon on my fly rod many years ago in a remote river, Float Plane access only. Looks like the same kind of fly. Very hard to sink a fly in a pool where the Kings always pick the cliff side of the pool where the water is deepest and fastest. Had a major fall flood which re-arranged the pool I had access to and allowed me to stand upstream from the new pool and merely float the line downstream and hold it it one spot. Had 5 strikes before I hooked one fish. It tasted might good.

Hi Jaap, I tied up my own version of this fly with the materials I got from you. Going for summer steelhead this weekend! Do you fish these flies with with floating lines, sink tips, or both? Thanks!
@SkeenaRiverFlySupply4 жыл бұрын
Hi James. Sorry for the late reply. I just noticed your comment. Hope you had a nice trip. I fish them with both. I like to use a long leader and a line that is relatively low sink rate. That allows the fly so sink lower than the tip and gives it a nice action when I twitch the line. Hope that helps :-)
@janusz.panicz4 жыл бұрын
A presentation followed by landing a fish is always a good one ;-) Thanks for sharing Jaap. With regard to mending. I personally like to use aerial mend, before the line lands on the water. If I really want to sink my fly deep the I don't let the whole shooting line out during the forward cast and keep approximately 3 meters spare line which I release no sooner then my rig lands on the water - I prefer that technique rather then making a step or two downstream. PS. You live in paradise having all that great water at your door steps. All the best and looking forward to watching more !!
