I worked for the Bell System on 7 different departments. As a tech i saw all the old switching equipment retired and replaced with electronic systems. The underground cables were all spliced together by hand.

Ah ha!! 5:34 ... the wheel of fortune. Okay. I didn't really try to make prank calls. I was just calling 📞 using a phone ☎️ thinking 👩 🤔 my mother would answer a question or give cookie 🍪 permission. They always asked where my mother was and what my phone number was. 1 mommy 👩 2 I think it is number 1 or number 2. Who do I ask to tell me for you? It was like asking exactly where I lived and my mother's name when I was sitting waiting in a shop for her. 1 AT HOME 🏡 2 MOMMY 👩. WHEN THE LADIES FROM OUT OF TOWN PRESSED ME FOR THE CORRECT ANSWERS. I DID A LOT OF POINTING 👉 👈 👇. WELL, I GET IN THE BACK SEAT OF THE CAR AND I SIT DOWN. I CAN'T SEE OUT THE WINDOWS, BECAUSE I AM ALMOST 4. WHEN THE CAR IS MOVING I LEAN BACK IN THE SEAT UNTIL 💺 I FALL OVER ON THE SEAT ON WAY OR THE OTHER. THEY ALWAYS HAD TO ASK: WHY DO YOU FALL OVER? I FALL OVER WHEN NONE OF MY SISTERS ARE IN THE CAR SQUISHING ME. 🚗 I KNOW WE ARE GOING TO STOP WHEN I FALL INTO THE FRONT SEAT WITH MOMMY OR MY BIG SISTER. SOME TIMES WE GO HOME 🏡. SOMETIMES, WE DON'T GO HOME. THEY ALWAYS ASKED: HOW DO YOU GET HOME 🏡? I LEARNED AN ANSWER. MOMMY HAS A STEERING WHEEL AND A PEDDLE ON THE FLOOR. IF WE HAVE GAS ⛽ AND THE CAR IS NOT BROKE, SOMETIME AFTER WE LEAVE A PLACE, WE GET TO BE STOPPING AT OUR HOUSE. YOU WANNA COME? YOU SHOULD HOLD ON TO THE LITTLE🎉 ROUND KNOB ON THE DOOR 🚪. IF MAKES THE WINDOW 🪟 GO UP AND DOWN. I CANNOT PLAY WITH IT. MY SISTER WILL HOT ME. EITHER I AM GETTING VERY OLD OR MY COMEDY ROUTINE IS GETTING WELL WORN. 🤔 🙃 😊

A shame they're miming it. Sounds identical to the original recording, and there's no one there playing a polyphonic synth. (The SH-101 keytar that is seen here is monophonic.)

We had a "party line" when I was a kid. We lived in a rural area. Our phone had one short ring, the second party had 2 short rings, etc. We were advanced compared to one of our neighbors that had a shortwave radio they would request a number abd it would come over the radio.

This video strikes me funny. Our house was built in 1969, So it was, of course, retrofitted for your landline phones. My parents bought the house in 2004, when landlines were still very prevalent. Both of my parents had cell phones at the time, so whenever a telephone company would come to the house to offer their services, they were very surprised that my parents weren't interested in getting landline service again. There are only two remaining exposed RJ-11 style jacks. One in my parents room, and one in my bedroom. Ironic that I have a western electric 500 and a trim line hooked up to a Cell2Jack device, and not the original jacks.

About the tone quality of dial tones: The demonstration unit undoubtedly used a simple buzzer to simulate dial tone. In reality, there were different means of generating tone. In the Bell System, you most likely heard tone from a rotary generator. There were many flavors of these; different ones served different needs, and they had slightly different sounds. The earlier types used a rotating commutator and brushes, like small DC motors and electric tool motors. These made a tone with a lot of noise and harmonics, a harsher sound. Later ones were tone alternators, which made a more mellow tone. Some tiny exchanges used a non-mechanical generator that was somewhat harsh. After touch tone dialing arrived, a change was made to create the dial tone we mostly remember, called “precise dial tone.” This tone has fewer harmonics that might interfere with the touch tones, causing dialing errors.
