Thank you for sharing this. I recently found Reys theme by John Williams and analysed it - that piece is good example of changing instruments, registers, tonality during the composition

This is great! As far as the Clarinet's weak notes F4-G4. Those notes have always been trouble when trying to put into the woodwinds. The F4-G4 notes in the Bassoon are often too thin, but piercing. Oboe is too blunt and nasal. Flute is too weak. Horn is too "round" of a sound in many cases. I am orchestrating piano music of Brahms. Because he is playing chords mostly in closed position in the right hand, he is often using a sort of 4 voice: tenor, alto 1, alto 2, mezzo-soprano voicings, in that middle area of the piano around middle-C. So horn is also not good because the Alto 1 part would sound too big in the horn. (relative to the mezzo-soprano part). The example I'm thinking of is Brahms Op. 9 Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann. In this piece, the alto 1 voice is almost always on the F4-G4 range. In the orchestration, I used Clarinet 2 for the Alto 1 Voice. But this clarinet is almost always on or around F4-G4. Sometimes I do have Clarinet 2 go below Bassoon 1, and have the Bassoon 1 take the F#. But this is often to avoid fourths between the clarinet pair. (You probably already know this, but Brahms sort of follows strict counterpoint in considering the fourth a dissonance. He will rarely have a Woodwind pair playing in fourths, unless the chord is an inversion.) What suggestions do you have for Alto parts in the woodwinds. It's really an annoying range.

Great lecture! I just wanted to ask how is the G flat tone included in the scale as it has nothing to do with the main polychord that you used in the beginning. Is it from B flat minor scale? How do you decide the scale that you use when you're using polychords as a foundation?
