Very informative piece about the band. I had no idea Andy was a wrestler before the band started.

This was great. While I love pretty much every Nothingface song, I thoroughly enjoyed your breakdown of Skeletons. I just relistened to the entire album whole way through first time since before Oct 7, 2023 and the lyrics were the first thing that struck me. I was able to pick up critiques of the West from almost every track off Skeletons. In fact the lyrics off that album are some of the most poignant critical descriptions of the West I have ever seen. "Hate is nothing new, Murderers watching every step, Ignorance oblivious to all the evidence, Repent for all that were the innocent, Forget so we can all rest" is basically America's prayer. I was also delighted to discover that my favorite band not only made some of the absolute best nu metal to ever be played, but they also had such an incredible perspective that I resonant with so deeply. I definitely noticed their lyrics were more on the progressive side when I was a teenager but I was still such a baby back then. 20 years later I have a deep appreciation for how corrupted and evil our androcratic world is, the various subsystems that have been birthed from it like capitalism, patriarchy, etc. they are the things destroying our world. God I wish Matt was still with us. I think he and I would have gotten along well, would have at least been able to have an interesting conversation with him. I hope he's at peace. Matt, you are a legend.

You said it, Matt was so much more sharp and observant than I'd ever given him credit for, it really would have been great if he'd had the opportunity to do more. Walking On Bodies is an underappreciated masterpiece of imperialist criticism.

@ThisReviewKillsFascists totally agree man. Thanks so much for doing this review and for continuing to bring awareness to this band despite them being broken up almost 20 years now. I think Matt would have written some absolutely scathing and brilliant stuff if he was still here watching what was going down.

Extreme metal is generally not about love and flowers. It's about frustrations let free, sometimes to the extreme, to increase emotions. CD does this the best. Not a religion though....

I’ve been friends with Travis and Cattle D. since 2001, and there is nothing fascist about any of his beliefs. This video analysis has completely missed the concurrent theme in his lyrics: destroying each other,themselves, and their environment is part of the human condition. We can objectively agree that the world would be a better place without humans, however, it would be self-sabotaging to advocate for humanity’s extinction considering we all have people we love and care about (Travis included), and our survival is codependent on one another. In death metal, you’re able to express morbid thoughts and ideas without being taken literal, as it’s an art form, not an instruction manual or manifesto. Ozzy Osbourne “Suicide Solution” Judas Priest “Better by You, Better Than Me” Slayer “Postmortem” and “Dead Skin Mask” All those bands (those songs in particular) were blamed for horrific crimes and/or tragedies conducted by fans of said bands. It is nothing new for metal bands to receive blame for something they had nothing to do with. As unfortunate as it is (as even pointed out in Cattle D.’s lyrics), many people are fucked up, and will do fucked up things to each other (as mentioned earlier regarding the human condition). I highly recommend you at least try to contact the people discussed within your subject matter, as it will add credibility obtaining information from a primary source.
@ThisReviewKillsFascists4 ай бұрын
Taking as read that human nature is to destroy and human extinction would objectively be a good thing is exactly the sentiment that prompted me to make this video, and is addressed as the foundation of the point I'm making. Many have taken what I've said in this video as my failure to comprehend that satire can be an extreme exaggeration of what the satirist would actually like to see happen, comparing what's said on this album to other works where horrors are depicted so as to state an argument or just have a fun creepy time with art. I promise that I understand why people put violent and cruel themes into their creative output, and I celebrate those who do it well, which often includes Cattle Decapitation, but it's also crucial to explore where the basis for those violent fantasies lies. In the case of Death Atlas, that basis is "humans bad," which extrapolates to the logical extreme of "genocide has a bright side," which is an extremely dangerous, evil mindset that many hold sincerely. I truly believe that neither you nor Travis directly support any fascist agendas, but that doesn't contradict anything I said in the video. Your suggestion to attempt to contact primary sources is a good one, and although I try to fill that void with direct quotes in appropriate context, I will endeavor to improve my future work in that way.

The video was strong before the end. Talking about how much you agree with the anarchist/anti establishment views of the band yet you only throw shade against the bands who symphatize with Trump Implying to me you don't complain about guys like Green Day endorsing guys like Sanders and Biden is a cuck move buddy and far from being anti establishment

It's weird seeing someone understand that the band's early lyrics were hyperbolic and cathartic, but not realize that the band's newer songs are the exact same way. Obviously, the band doesn't want to kill all humans. Be real.

Dunno dude, I feel like you are thinking this way too hard. I've personally never cared much about the environment, until I listened to death atlas. It was the first album of theirs that I actually listened with thought and it made me think that maybe we should do something, and I'm not talking about a genocide. Also, didn't "bring back the plague" release before the pandemic?

So how are those leftist politics working out for you? Turns out they were the more of the two evils. Turns out they are the war mongers. Not saying the right is any better but the only ones trying to stop this massive decline in society is some republicans and they are demonized by the democrat media. The left are trying to brainwash children. They are trying to destroy everything that makes america such a good place. Your political beliefs and voting have lead us to a dementia patient in the white house. Congrats. You really played yourself.

There are good bands that were never really nu metal but often get mistaken for it (soad, ratm, helmet) good bands that are legitimately part new metal but do something different too like punk or thrash elements (snot, deftones, soulfly). But there are very few good pure nu metal bands. I'm going to throw up sevendust.

Just want to state for the record, I whiffed the analysis of what The Lightning was about pretty hard. Not to say it's NOT about what I say in the video, lyrics are always open to interpretation and mean many things, but I failed to recognize the meaning that is referenced in the title of the song, What Should We Do With Your Body? This element of the lyrics is taken from the perspective of the owning class, looking at the working class and salivating at the potential to exploit and use up their lives ("all of their beautiful bodies") to produce value. Lines like "Oh the views you'll see over cross danglings" and "The willing whore is the hand of the Lord" are propagandistic efforts to convince people to celebrate this exploitation, and the recitation of "God is everywhere" instills an acceptance in this being the natural order of things (echoed later in the album when The Blizzard turjs into "He's got the whole world in his hands"). If you'd like the hear a Congleton song that much more directly talks about how unlikely it can be to find companionship and human connection, check out Put Your Teeth In by The Nighty Nite (a personal favorite of his discography)

I'll never forget the first time I saw/heard of Nothingface. 1998 in Raleigh NC opening for Soulfly, and another unheard of band at the time..... System of a down. I knew almost instantly that Nothingface was going to be huge. They were amazing live, but huge never came. Instead they have the much better position of being loved by the few that really appreciated what they were doing. Time has only made their work much more appreciated to us few that knew who they were!

Thank you for this video. There’s a certain mystique surrounding this band for me. They weren’t the first band I listened to or anything but they were that one band I could never get enough of. I think the saddest band art of all is that their sound just got better every album. Mostly kidding with this statement but shame on you for putting down I am him. That’s one of my all time favorites. There is no bad song on Skeletons. It’ll go down in my book at the best metal album of all time

@terriblecertainity11 ай бұрын
it's an interesting perspective on their lyrics! I always considered Cattle Decapitation as an outlet for the rage you feel when dealing with humans: you see them destroy the planet for greed, so you want them to die. It's as simple as it is cathargic. They became my go-to band after watching the news for that reason. Just like a depressive suicidal black metal band doesn't really condone suicide, they just use that topic to release those thoughts. It's just frustration and rage. I don't think their aim is to tell people what to do or to solve a problem, they are PISSED because we are most likely doomed.

After watching this video, all I can say is that Travis's lyrics are NOT meant to be taken as seriously or literally as you've taken them, and that if you know who, specifically, With All Disrespect was written about, that person deserved every bit of the ire in those lyrics.

I love Nothingface, I even got to see them open for Pantera on their last tour before breaking up back in 2001. That said, I'm glad to see another big Nothingface fan publicly say that Pacifier is not really that good or indicative of the band's trademark sound. In fact, I'm pretty tired of hearing "fans" say that was their best album and 'after that one, they sold out, man'. /eyeroll

Yeah...... Nah. Sorry, I think this video takes Cattle Decap fans to be fools and is a little patronising. Perhaps useful to the very young getting into this metal style, but most people understand that this is art, theatre and all its inherent contradictons. You can debate whether or not it's good or bad art, but to basicly call Cattle Decap eco-fascists and putting them on the same bus as real eco-fascists who commited racialy motivated massacres is about as ridiculous as Christian parents in the early 80s who dragged Judas Priest through the courts. This video made one fair point though - that Cattle Decaps messages should be taken as warnings about the future. That's exactly how the fans take them, including warnings about bigotry and false narratives around over-population etc. The fans are a bit smarter that what's premised here. We get it and don't need a lecture.

Man, this was some far stretching bs... so what now we're claiming anyone who hates humanity for its blatant transgressions on not only themselves but the natural order as a whole is a fascist? Get out of here with that shit. Also, the part about phil is particularly telling of what you're trying to push. You said it yourself he pulled that stunt after their collab... are we accusing robb flynn of it too since he was on stage? Should anyone who's ever pissed next to the man at a urinal publically apologize? Fuck no... the guy did what he did and thats on him have they dobe shit with him since? No, they haven't... This conspiritoral nonesense is ridiculous. travis has stated how much he despises humans as a whole, not in specific regions, not any one group over the other, no all of it. Insinuating that he is some closet facist is laughable and beyond nonsense.
