Isn't this just tourism/inaugural chasers made easier by moving around London being relatively easy? Might just be Christmas but numbers for the 28th are down to under 600 when Bushy has been reasonably stable at ~1300+. Battersea non first timers seem to be around 300-400 so maybe 400-500 once it settles down? Seems unlikely to beat Bushy again apart from maybe a milestone.

It's actually pretty cool and interesting from the perspective of traffic engineering imo. Traffic yields to traffic coming from the right, meaning it works the opposite as a normal roundabout; instead of giving way to traffic already on the roundabout, anyone on the circle should give way to those entering the circle. This means that essentially it's not actually a roundabout; it's more like a massive intersection, with a lot of lanes to give space for a lot of cars waiting to get through the intersection. Roads don't need many lanes for capacity, it's only the intersections that do. So in that sense the Arc de Triomphe setup makes perfect sense. even though it's pretty car centric this is a rare example of something I would say should be a traffic engineering "monument', something historical to maintain even if it's not optimal.

Nice to see a Parkrun going ahead in central London. My understanding was that there were no London Parkruns as the Royal parks were unwilling to let an event go on for free and therefore Parkrun, as a free/voluntary organisation wasn't able to have events in London. Nice to see at least one local council taking a non-commercial approach to their residents' well-being.

Well, there are 64 London parkruns…
@kandamy1Ай бұрын
@@aleksmot Okay, maybe I should have been more specific- I'm based in Knightsbridge, which meant my nearest Parkruns were Wormwood Scrubs, Fulham Palace or Highbury Fields. None of those are really central London and cycling to them would have been the best part of an hour each way and then the Parkrun on top! Now I could just pop over the river and attend this one- I won't because that is too busy for me but nice to know it's there.

I have run at Bushy mainly at Christmas time over the last few years, this turnout completely dwarfs that significantly. I’m fortunate to have 2 Parkruns within a reasonable distance of where I live. It’s remarkable how this has been such a success over the years. I attended with my brother and we were surprised by the numbers. The volunteers all gave their best and certainly went the extra mile, there were a few drops of rain and then it stopped. The rolling start was probably as good as you could get with the numbers of folk running. The hardest bit was to have just enough space to allow you to either pass by someone or to let others by. Everyone was well behaved and really seemed to get the spirit as it were. The children of all ages were very well behaved and none made a fuss about waiting. For me the challenge was to keep up with the runners ahead with the gold helium balloons as a focus point. The funnel was as good as you could have made it. The finish time is not important but the actual being there and a part of a magic moment is something that will be remembered by everyone there. I cannot envisage another event having this number of runners. The biggest of thank yous has to go to the fantastic folk that allowed it to happen, without them it would not have been possible. A great day, a great turnout and a great advert for Parkrun! Thank you one and all!
