people make fake coins as well. buy from legitimate coin stores and reputable ones. Costco does not buy their stuffs from the streets, they buy from reputable coin dealers. That is also why once you bought them, you can't return it to costco because the store will not be able to test whether it is real or fake.

Good tips but horrible lightning for this demonstration.

I thought the bottom one is the fake since the date is hard to read. And the fakes were easy to read the dates on them. Plus that whip like curve at the bottom does not appear on any gold coin and why i guessed wrong.

The coins have a "cleaned" look if that makes any sense. I recently went to a collectable show near me ( in N.J.) and a vendor had all these "morgans" that had a similar look. And by look I mean....not worn but "dirt" near the edges / details. I was like...ummm no. I did get a slice or 2 of pizza (100 % legit!) :D

Can tell by the ringing of the raw one that it was real. Saw a 🐉 pamp bar that was fake, it was sintered tungsten plated with gold. UFB 💀💀💀

I’ve been wanting to buy gold for years, but haven’t done so… I was always scared of getting a fake bar. I was thinking that I could open the package in front of the bouillon dealer and cut the bar in half to check, if it was fake, he’d have to give me my money back. Is this advisable?

China fakes EVERYTHING that carries value; while living there i learned a lot of counterfeit comes out of N Korea. But this is very troublesome ... 🏴‍☠️

Funny you should post this. A couple of years back, I had purchased a couple of (seemingly) 10 gram PAMP Suisse gold bars in the blue and clear assay cards just like that from a rather reputable coin dealer here in the Milwaukee area. Then last year, I took a much closer and more detailed look at those things, and man, the fakery is absolutely impeccable. It's even fooling the so-called "experts". Upon realizing this, I immediately drove over to that same coin dealer and traded them in for some legit 1/10th oz. AGE's which I knew were real. I figure, if this clown is dumb enough to sell them, then he's dumb enough to give me my hard-earned money back. I was not happy with him for selling those to me in the first place. He had no flippin' clue. Anyway, I don't deal with him anymore. I take my business elsewhere these days.

do you know anything about gold libertads not testing positive for gold on sigma metallic verifiers? i bought them from apmex and apmex is certain the products they sell is real but on the sigmas it isn’t within the brackets. i have 2018 and 2019 reverse proof libertads. non seem to test positive on sigmas

ebay is brimming with fake ones these days, mostly PAMP and Perth Mint bars. People even buy them when the seller has fresh bad reviews due to selling fakes. It's crazy how easy it is to make 1000s of bucks with fake bars. Most of those idiot buyers probably only realize their mistake years later.

Gold is so dense that whenever I hold a piece in my hand, my brain short-circuits. It doesn't seem possible that something so small can weigh a full ounce. This also works with 20 franc gold coins, though they only weigh a small fraction of an ounce. The thicker fake bar will not do this to me, because I'm looking at it and holding it at the same time, and my brain does the calculating for me. Counterfeiters know that most buyers won't be willing to take the bar out of its plastic card.
