My kids and I are going through the woods and reviving old trees

Folks like Tom Brown are a gift to society. But if you want to help; plant and grow an old heritage Apple variety. Even apartment dwellers can get potted dwarf trees of heritage varieties if you ask around. You can also find the tree that suits you. Produces apples over many weeks. Or makes a ton of apples at once. Sweet. Super Sweet. Sweet and sour. Huge. Juicy, dry, great cookers. Jacks of many abilities. Apples that store 6-7 months even. There is an apple for every taste.

I am a cocoa farmer in Trinidad. In the past few years the frosty pod disease is wiping out orchards in the Caribbean and S America. We were able to find one old Trinidad variety they called ICS95 which was resistant to frosty pod. It was not being propagated or commercially grown until 2 years ago. It’s sad that the US apple industry has not maintained the incredible genetic diversity it once had. Every plant has value!! Not maintaining this diversity can lead to painful lessons.

This is an incredibly important undertaking. It’s so good in this age of uniformity to preserve these old and diverse apple trees.

You know the seeds from one kind of apple won’t grow the same type of apple tree. Apple trees have to be grafted from an already existing tree to ensure the type of apple

How can we reach Tom Brown? We have discovered an old heirloom orchard up on Lake Ontario, with what appears to be scores of different varieties, around 100 years old or older, overgrown and unattended, but clearly structured as an orchard back in the day.

Where are you and, are you still doing this? I want to try some of your apples. Here in Spokane I have started Rambour Franc (1535) Edelborsdorfer (1175) Bardsey (1998, 'though the tree dates about 1873), Claygate Pearmain (1832) and others.

This man should have a grant and be able to preserve all the apple varieties left in the world. These strains are part of human history and it's a shame modern agriculture has lost so much of its past.

Hi New Englander/shadowkitty, Thanks so much for the tip. I will pass it on to my "apple people" here in the SW Washington area. If you have any other apple story ideas let me know. I will probably be doing a follow up soon. Cheers, Lisa

Pssst: Try planting Newtown Pippin, Roxbury Russet, and Spitzenberg: they are some of my favorites and they make good juice, plus I imagine they are less common there than they are on this coast! -Sincerely Yours, A New Englander
