Glad you are enjoying the amazing life story of George Bates. George and my father Bob Shepherd operated Commuter Airlines out of Auckland International Airport. George had written this transcript of his adventures and had given a few copies to friends and family. Unfortunately George passed away, but he had given the transcript to my father to see if he could do anything with it for him. As time went by my father also passed away but he had given the transcript to me. As the copy was getting old and faded and I knew this story was far to important to be lost, so I decided to convert the text to speech and put it on KZbin as a video so anyone that was interested could just listen to the whole book. The transcript should now live on forever because anyone can download every chapter. George Bates would have never believed his transcript could be listened to by people all over the world.

I was born in Suva, Fiji (1956) On June 8, 1957 my father John Mitchell, was a crew member on the MV Sea Pearl. The engine room caught fire forcing her crew to abandon ship into 2 lifeboats. There was no loss of life. The only food in the lifeboat was a box of NZ apples, which supplied some nourishment and hydration. I cannot remember how long they were lost at sea. One day a small plane flew overhead and dropped something out of the window. The men rowed to it and found a tobacco tin with a scribbled map, showing the way to the Wewak River, where they were led to a Catholic Mission, where my father and his crewmates recuperated for one month. After a month, the crew members were flown home to their respective countries. I'm assuming they were at sea for a week or more, especially as they had to recuperate for one month! My mother told me the shipping company's owner knocked on her door one morning to advise her that the ship was lost at sea and a search had begun. I can't imagine what she and my father went through! I was 6 months old and my older brother was 2.5 years old! My father never returned to sea to work after that as he thought "I could have died and left my wife with 2 small children!) My parents immigrated from Suva, Fiji to New Westminster, BC Canada in 1964. He workedas aa heavy-dutyy machinist in BC, installing machinery into dams, pulp mills, and other large construction sites throughout BC. At the start of his retirement 1977, he built a 35' Bruce Roberts fiberglass sailboat, all by himself, and enjoyed his retirement sailing through the Gulf Islands, Vancouver Island and inside the Georgia Straight in British Columbia, Canada with friends and family. My parents passed away in the port city of Nanaimo, BC I loved hearing my father stories about his adventures on the sea. My parents were adventurous and were married for 53 years. They're gone now and I miss them dearly. He taught me the love and respect of nature and the sea and she taught me to just keep on loving. I will always remember the Wewak River and would love to visit that area one day! Thanks for reading! Thelma Mitchell

The light brightness control and the defuser got rid of most of the flickering but there is a little flickering left. I didn’t mind that as it shows it was a film that had been converted. A white background such as snow was probably the worst film I could have chosen as a sample.
