Managed to snag this a while back from Hornby entirely off of reward points when they marked it down to 150. Very satisfied with the model and I loved the review!

Sam; love your reviews! Please forgive my trip down memory lane; Flying Scotsman was the second loco I ever purchased with my pocket money back in the early seventies (the first was a GWR pannier). This Hornby offering seems mechanically superior and is visually stunning, would make a great stable-mate to my old Scotsman. Your videos convey your excitement and passion for your subject, along with your solid objectivity (with a sprinkle of good humour) Bravo and thank you

As a lad of 12 or 13, my first and only OO steam locomotive was a Triang "Princess" class pacific. This was about 60 years ago on a small 4 X 8 layout. All I remember is that it looked great flying around the track with three maroon and cream BR coaches and a royal mail coach. How detailed it was I don't remember, but your look at the A3 brought back memories. Thanks. By the way, is this your only layout or do you have another full scale model railway hidden away somewhere?

What's the correct name of this loco? The box spells "LEMBERG" with a "G" (minute 4:03), the mainplate on the loco itself spells "LEMBERC" with a "C" (minute 10:45)...? Only one can be correct.

It made me soooo happy... When he said.. was it worth ALLL THAT TIME to clean up the motor. NOOOO. NO IT WASNT... the defeat in his voice was great. He was sooooo confident and hoping it was JUST perfectly fine.. lmao. And . It turns but he calls it bad.. Ya know . Deserved then, if uour just gonna get a new motor. Then yeah. The defeat is deserved. I think. Wonder if he has the same thought

Although one might think it should go without saying, it is still good to see that some new Hornby locos, such as this one, run well. Please try harder Hornby. For example, Hornby, are you sure that you do not test prototypes using a feedback controller?

I have this exact model - it was on a New Year's sale on Hornby's site for £150, but I paid £125 since I live in America. My version is amazing, runs really well...though I am tempted to use its chassis for a great big blue engine...we shall see though! Lovely model regardless

0:42 There is a third type of track on the secondary market, and that is brass track dating from the 1960s into the mid-to-late 1970s. This can be easily identified by the color of the rails, and shares the oxidation issues with steel track. Other older track to avoid is track with fiber ties (sleepers) - these will warp and go out of gauge if you attempt to use a wet ballasting method.

Sam, not sure if someone said this...but I think with the quality control issues with this model at full price is a bit of a cheek. On the blast pipe (left hand side) from the smoke box to the pistons there is A HAIR IN THE PAINT!

Hi Sam, yet another exemplary review! And a stunning looking loco! Just a small idea: the part where you give your brief history of the real world examples, you stae how many are preserved, maybe if possible it would be good if you can state where the preserved locos are? As you only occasionally include that information.

It is interesting that the body mold line (14:25) and the wonky handrail (15:15) were passed over.

It makes me question Hornby's logic when they have a speaker space in the tender which looks like it's meant to fit the old TTS spealer when the HM7000 is available which they should be pushing. The mind boggles. Better to remove that moulding so that you coud fit a larger enclosure for a modern speaker.

I have plenty of black goods locos so gave this one a miss even when I saw it at £125 at TMC. What I'd love is an A3 in the BR experimental purple. I believe in real life sevens A3s were painted in that livery but Hornby haven't done one since pre DCC days (St. Frusquin) IMO they're really missing a trick there.

I have one of these. I think it looks wonderful - a beautiful loco in a very smart livery. Runs well too. I usually put it in front of some BR Mk1s in maroon. Completely un-prototypical of course but a pleasure to watch.

It does look great, and I did enjoy seeing the Scottish aviator in wartime black for its brief period on show before it went back to have the frames sorted out… having said that, on some of the video the firebox looks to be a different finish or a different shade of black. Is it just the light?

now im not the biggest fan of the "normal" express locomotives. But with that being said an older hornby A1/A3 you would enjoy if you can find it goes by the name sandwich. Shes got the double chimney in br green. But i do agree with you the wartime black is quite lovely on these

The LNER Wartime black looks really great on the A1/A3, but I think it would be better if Hornby released a weathered variant instead of it being clean. However, my favorite variant of the A3 is still the initial preservation Scotsman, in LNER Green with the red nameplate. However, i don’t think this is the most recent hornby A3. When they released the Dublo Scotsman’s, they slightly changed the scale to make it a bit smaller, which I guess is more accurate to OO. Also, they added a 21 pin decoder and I think spring loaded contacts on the baseplate, as the dublo Scotsman’s had spring loaded contacts. However, great video as always Sam! Keep up the good work!

For Canada's 150th Anniversary, Bradford Exchange produced a train set advertised as being "HO scale on HO track". I bought it and discovered it on ON30. HO track: yes, HO scale: hell no. I complained to them and future advertisements dropped the "HO scale" reference and just kept the reference to "HO track". Apparently they're back to they're misleading tricks. Incidentally, model was produced in 2016/17, was made by Bachmann, appears to be identical, but at least it has a metal (and working) valve gear. I ended up buying the entire set because no manufacturer was making a Canadian commemorative set. Something I've regretted ever since.

Hi Steve 😎👍, I prefer olstime steamers and diesel switcher engines because I really enjoy freight cars and I grew up very close to a railroad in Portland and I have been trying to get my layout to resemble the trains that I grew up with in the 70's to the present ❤️😎👍

Thanks for making a review about about yet another Gresley Pacific still interesting to watch 😂 Good to see a nice running loco from Hornby as well. Will add: 15:15 , what’s with that handrail on the cab? Missing a lover holder over covered in glue? Best

Seeing a British steam engine with eight tender wheels have always boggles my mind since I'm so used to seeing them with only six.

Great video, Sam 👍. As nice as the A1s and A3s look in LNER green, the black certainly makes a nice change. It's great to see them in something other than green once in a while.
@OlivierGabin19 сағат бұрын
A good model overall with minimal drawbacks, but in need of some upgrades (flywheel to add, sprung basekeeper plate, 8 pins socket, tender-engine connection). And a more than correct level of performance. Unfortunately pricey at the original retailer's price without bargain... A possible candidate for an ameliorated version in 2/3 years, the base is sound. I might buy one in LNER wartime black then...
@stuartburton116719 сағат бұрын
I wonder why they painted locos in black. It must have been an economic measure because it wouldn't work as camouflage not with the large plume of steam and ash following the engine everywhere.
@andrewyoung74918 сағат бұрын
1-during a bombing run at night a black loco is more blended in than any other type, even if steaming away. and certainly if lying in a yard 2-vlack paint is cheaper to use, and doesn't look as work worn so quickly there was a war on you know.....
@NextEevolution19 сағат бұрын
Overall I do like this model, though the hard wired base, lack of flywheel, and eight pin socket is weird. While that ROP is delusional, I am completely ok with companies properly updating tooling rather than having to start from scratch, especially if it means seeing certain models re-released. While that firebox flicker looks good, I don't know why there's such variance in how noticeable that feature is with Hornby. It's not a big deal admittedly but I've got four Hornby locos with firebox flicker. On three of my models, you can barely tell the feature exists. On the fourth model, the firebox doors are a portal straight to the sun. Just some middle ground is all i'm asking for. Great review as usual! Would have actually been nice to see this Black A3 running a fast freight service!

Was tempted about one of these for quite a while. Trouble is, without a big enough layout or rolling stock, it’s a bit impractical to get too many big engines… It does look smart and that offer was *very* interesting

Well, H seem to have found a well good path forwards Sam after quite some years of troublesome and highly questionable matters. Perhaps the exit of Mr. K have had some influences; unlikely it being a coincidence we gather. Well good Job H, and what a steal for the price Really. Cheerio.

Hey Sam. I've got the same model in my collection. Mine doesn't have glue marks on front buffer beam and cab fits the running plate. Though the dome isn't a part of the moulding. Mine I had to fit myself. Funny how Lemberg has the older wire tender connection and 8 pin. Yet Hermit is 21 pin and the newer tender connection, the same as the smoke generator Flying Scotsman. So there must be a cross over in the A1/A3 range

I wonder how many of these models are customer returns to the retailer and are customer bodged repairs. Then the retailer just sends them out to the next on-line shopper. I hate buying stuff on-line. Im sure they send out out their crap.
