My very poor white born in the 50's parents bought the Rhyme & Reason movie for me when I was 10 years old and it became like my bible. I was already deeply in love with Hip Hop but that was a whole new world for me being from Tampa Florida

And what is Flash's "problem" exactly? He's whining over nothing! If he'd known The Message was gonna be a hit he would've recorded it, he knows that. Why collect the cheques if the track is against his beliefs? Load of complete BS..

This docu missed out quite a lot and it's not super accurate so do your own research if you're interested. I remember when rap became popular in the early 80s, Gangsta rap messed it all up.. they started killing each other and nowadays it's a total joke! It stopped being any good in the mid 00's imo.

This documentary was made in 1999, so it is now older than Rapper's Delight was when they filmed this. 🤯

Kinda feels disrespectful looking at today's sold out collateral damage of HipHop... Then again it's not even HipHop no more, it's something else awful.

To make it simple for you guys, African-Americans, invented hip-hop, and it started from slavery, old folk songs in gospel music that turned into blues, rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, R&B soul music all the rest of the other good genres that Black African-Americans created and turned into hip-hop is just a transformation of genres … hence why a lot of hip-hop samples from old soul, music and old classic African-American songs from lyrics to beats
@EllaJay

I'm not sure you made the "African-American" part clear enough lol. But I read your other post too, this is just an old docu.. There's no need to get worked up over some inaccuracies. ✌️

You lied on the documentary cool hurt did nothing to make the base of his hip-hop.THAT SOUNDS CRAZY All he did was continue the African-American like James Brown and others break beats and loop it that’s it. He didn’t play part in eventing hip-hop

Why didnt they just ban the production of samplers? ahhhh,well then Record labels wouldnt have been able to slap hip hop artists with huge lawsuits, that's why. Call me cynical, but did the Recoed Label CEO's and thier armies of contract attorneys, really care about the integrity and reputation of thier represented artist. No they just saw it as way of making more money through lawsuits. And look at what happened to Hip Hop. It got smashed to piecces, got eaten up by corporate recoed labels, and resurfaced as Gangster Rap, and crappy cheesy comercial not even rap, just crap. Greed and creativity dont mix very well. All a musician wants is for as many people as possible to hear their music. Greedy CEO's want to claim ownership over as much as possible. But dont have any actual talent themselves. Ask a lawyer to play a guitar, he'd ask you to book a meeting with his secretary first.

What's been lost about sampling is that in the late 80's you had to find that obscure vinyl before you could sample it. Now its just clickety click got it

If a dude makes a photo of an existing building and claims that he is an artist, where is the difference to someone taking an already existing sound and making music with it? I understand both sides, but it will always be a grey area and no white or black.

@@lee_drifting which i totally understand. My point is just that some people doing "exactly" the same get so much fame and credits, and other people doing that kind of stuff are called lazy people and so on. So photographer is then considered a lazy painter. :D
