Have dived peacock many times. Because of the part of taming the slough that describes this dive I have always shed away from this tunnel. I prefer entering either of the two entrances at orange Grove sink and running the circuit to Olsen. The peanut tunnel is also a fav. Long live the memory of Sheck

Another realistic cave dive with real video of the real cave from Jim Thomas. This is NOT a blue world flashy cave diving video with glitz and fluff. It is the REAL DEAL. A cave diving video that accurately represents its claim just the way it should be. This is EXactly what to expect in this system. I even recognized the last 1400 feet from my own experience there.

Read “Lost in the Slough” 10 years after my first dive there. With that much exposure before reading the story, I could see exactly what happened in my head as was reading it. A bunch of dives later with Paul Clark and …. you know the rest. Thanks again for the awesome feedback JT

Not enough animals doing crazy stuff? No cats!!! That’s it! 🤷🏻♂️ Very few people want to go into a cave underwater 🤔 It isn’t for the faint of heart, I was a commercial hard hat diver before going to caves and I still get the heebee jeebees for about 5 mins before I settle down. You can’t bail out of a cave dive, you gotta go back the way you came in, no matter how long it takes, you gotta deal with. But hands down, it’s absolutely thrilling 😃 Then! Cave crack hmmmmmm 🤷🏻♂️

Sheck Exley was one of my heroes and a pioneer in the sport of cave diving. In 1979, while a 17-year-old freshman at FSU, I got hold of Ned DeLoach's "Diving Guide to Underwater Florida," in which I read about Peacock Springs. Shortly thereafter, another teen student and I dived this cave system, following a permanent line that had been installed. While my dive buddy had a more modern 80 cf aluminum tank, I had a steel 72 with a J valve, of the vintage Sheck used on his dive. We made it about halfway to Pothole and contemplated exiting Pothole, but it was our first cave dive, so we turned around. I was the leader, and when I arrived at the end of the line, I looked up for the slit through which we had passed to enter the tunnel (where the cavern turns to cave). I did not see it. Panic set in, but I reminded myself to stay calm, reasoning that it had to be there somewhere. Turns out, all we needed to do was swim a few feet farther; there it was, and we safely arrived at the surface. But I learned a valuable lesson that day, well, perhaps several. First and foremost, cave divers must always have a safety line, as it is so easy to become disoriented (every rock looks the same). Second, in challenging circumstances, try not to panic. Finally, cave diving is dangerous, and one must be properly trained and prepared. Adherence to the practice of multiple redundancies regarding essential gear is necessary to have the best chance of safely returning to the surface.

Wowza ❤️ it! That’s my kind of feedback 😃 That’s exactly how the cave feels, it’s not normal. You’re suspended weightless in a clear, colorless, cold and invisible medium. There is no strain on your body, the slightest flick of your fins moves you. It’s a little freaky for me in the first 10 min then, something changes and you relax, really relax. I liken this to the awakening of senses passed down through time maybe from amphibian ancestors. Sounds goofy but it happens to me every time I get dressed out, jump in, brrrrrrrrrr, everybody’s ready, down we go, circling lights in the cavern, everybody’s looking good, I get jittery, double checking everything for the fifth time, breath breath no holding breath or you die, teams in proper order, leveling off at 60 feet, still tense, pulling my GoPro setting up, then maybe a 100 ft more and ahhhhhhhh calm. 🤷🏻♂️ I love how we still call it footage 😀

Jeebus! Even Hansel & Gretel knew to leave a trail that could be followed, ok breadcrumbs weren't much good, but the idea was there, Going back even further in time, was it Perseus that slew the Minotaur? He (Or whoever, if I'm confused in my Mythology) used a thread to find his way out of the Labyrinth. Hundreds of years later though, that 'technology' seems to have been lost to the mists of time! SMH.
@eye-of-Ishtar2 жыл бұрын
An astute observation indeed!😀 So, Sheck tried to use a quideline on the dive before the one in the film. It was a string wrapped around a coffee can. It came unraveled in the water and he and his buddy became entangled and nearly drowned. They left it on the bank on there next dive. So they knew they should have a guideline but, importantly, they didn’t know it was CRITICAL to their survival. 👀 Why is this? The caves/caverns they had experienced previously had sand floors. Sand settles quickly after being kicked up by ones fins. Thus, untrained divers are spared a horrible fate. Peacock slough is a different beastie altogether, laden with a thick layer of fine silt that COMPLETELY wipes out visibility when disturbed. Untrained divers panic in these silt-outs and swim wildly until they either run out of air or get lucky and find their way out. This happened frequently in the early days of scuba diving in caves. Divers with cave training on the other hand use quidelines. We keep an eye on that line at all times during the dive. In a “silt out”situation, we are trained to put our finger’s around the line, no pulling on it, just fingers around the line like this 👌, and to follow it to a directional arrow or to clear water. Thanks so much for the feedback! Best Regards JT

@@eye-of-Ishtar Too scary for me!😬 Also, re: open circuit apparatus in a cave. When I found out that the bubbles hitting the roof of the cave actually loosen rocks and can cause the whole thing to come down on top of a diver I was surprised that it was allowed in caves, surely rebreathers should be mandatory underground. Watching these vids are enough cave danger for me thanks. 😁

He should have died in that cave, he was literally handed a miracle because I’ve Never heard of any other cave diver miraculously finding a separate unknown exit, especially with sunlight shining down. I don’t think his account can be relied upon 100% because he was def panicking, especially with him he saying he started thrashing about wildly when he saw the light and was in a very tight restriction. That means he was already very panicked and freaked even more almost instantly upon getting into that tight and small restriction. He would have made sure to make deliberate movements and to keep himself from thrashing about trying to get through and free by chance like that if he wasn’t already way past staying calm.
@eye-of-Ishtar2 жыл бұрын
He was definitely handed a miracle thats for sure!! That’s for dang sure!! But, credit goes to him as HE kept his shit together long enough to get to the tiny crevice, AND then had the adrenaline rush that powered him through that hell hole. It was truly the devil or the deep blue sea, and he wasn’t ready to die. But this is my best quess based on the evidence and the story that he left behind called “Lost in the Slough” Thanks for watching and thanks very much for the feedback, much appreciated best regards JT
