I used to think this was by far the weakest of the trilogy and Hot Fuzz was my easy favourite. It still is, but each time I watch this one, whilst the plot is not as "clever" as the other two, the performances blow me away. Pegg's portrail of Gary has real depth. At the start he just seems like a wastrel and a loser. But you slowly realise what a desperately sad and tragic character he is, planning one last pub crawl with his friends before ending himself (having tried before - hence the bandages on his wrists). It is then that the realisation sets in that the opening scene isn't an Alcoholics Anonymous session, but rather it is a mental health group therapy session for people who have attempted it... Nick Frost really gives 100% in his performance too. His character is 180 degrees different to those he normally plays yet he pulls it off with aplomb. Do either of them look out of their depth? I don't think they do despite being surrounded by acting heavyweights like Eddie Marsan (Vera Drake, Happy Go Lucky), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Fargo TV series), Paddy Considine (Dead man's Shoes, House of the Dragon). Pub Names :- The First Post - 1st Pub they visit. The Old Familiar - 2nd Pub looks identical to the 1st. The Famous Cock - 3rd Pub is where Gary is barred for being a dick. He's famous enough to be recognised years later and thrown out. The Cross Hands - 4th Pub. Crossed hands can be a symbol for teamwork. The guys have to work together in the toilet fight. The Good Companions - 5th Pub. So as not to attract attention, the guys pretend to have a good time with each other. The Trusty Servant - 6th Pub. Gary approaches the drug dealer to find out if he can trust him. Gary is told Robot means slave or servant in Czech. The Two-Headed Dog - 7th Pub, Sam meets the Twins, who talk in unison as if they are a two headed person. The Mermaid - 8th Pub. Just as mermaids seduced sailors, the marmalade sandwich seduce 3 of the guys to get their DNA. Also the pub sign is a redhead with a blonde either side. The Beehive - 9th Pub. Pierce Brosnan explains how the Robots work. Sounds like how an Ants nest or Bees are organised. The King's Head - 10th Pub. Look closely at the sign, looks like the face of Simon Pegg ie Gary KING's head. The Hole in the Wall - 11th pub. Car crashes into the pub, making a hole in the wall. The World's End - 12th pub. Our remaining heroes persuade the Aliens to sod off - leading to the end of the world. The Rising Sun. The pub that Gary and his blank buddies visit for "5 waters please..." Gary watched the sun rise looking over the town as a teenager after failing to do the Golden Mile. Also it's a new beginning for Gary symbolically.

Thank you so much for this comment and the insight into each pub. That was awesome! These comments are definitely making me rethink my original thought on the movie. And yes I did read all of this and learned the word “aplomb” so thank you for that as well!

The whole reason that Gary was doing the golden mile was so he could kill himself at the end, going out on a high. He brought no luggage with him because he knew he wouldn't need anything. Andy did not realise the full extent of Gary's plan until he saw the bandages from a previous attempt (so not actually an _AA_ group at the beginning) but he had realised that letting him keep drinking was only letting him head to destruction. Gary had essentially put on his full dress uniform with his 90's gear just like a soldier planning to end it all wearing his finery.

I completely understand why you prefer the other two over this one. I did too. Honestly I actually felt a little dissapointed first time I watched t The Worlds End. But since then I have watched all three of them DOZENS of times, and now this is by far my favourite. The callbacks and jokes are at least on par with hot fuzz, the action is surprisingly GREAT, but the story, the emotion, man it is just unmatched.

Yeah, you know, the more I think of it, I liked most of it. I think if I can somehow get past the sci fi alien part of it, I think I really liked it. I definitely liked The World's End better during repeat watchings. For one, it's a totally different thing when you go in already knowing Gary's deal. It's worth noting that, like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, absolutely _everything_ that happens in the film is telegraphed beforehand. Take note, in the beginning (when he's describing the previous go) of what happens to every crew member: what bar they left at, why, and the exact wording used to describe what happens. It tells you the whole plot of the movie in about two minutes, but you never realize it until you are able to get all of the puns and references. It's brilliant.

My favourite of the three. I find Hot Fuzz funnier, but this reminds of a glorious night in 1998, in the summer between leaving school and going to uni. A completely impromptu piss-up; just three of us, bored, on a Friday night, and then more people just kept showing up. We were 18, just passed all our exams, had fuck all to do until September... epic night that came out of nowhere.

Hot Fuzz is definitely the funniest of the three. But in terms of personal opinion, this one is my favourite. I think it's the most emotionally driven of the three. Also, it came out at a time where it felt like all of my friends were moving on with their lives, where as I was kind of stuck in a rut. So there were some parts of Gary's character that resonated with me.

Of the three this is the one I've seen grow on people more after subsequent watches, I liked it first time but liked it more after rewatching it and even rate it up there with Shaun of the Dead now, with Hot Fuzz being my favourite of the three, I just think Hot Fuzz was almost perfect and sooooo funny! Sure, perhaps the least funny of the trilogy. But its standout feature is the portrayal of nostalgia. Not quite my time: I was young in the 1980s, but I'm sure those who were young in the 1990s (in the UK) will recognise a lot of the cultural vibe here. It's also a very moving depiction of a man who never grew up, desperate for his life to mean something. In my opinion one of Simon Pegg's best performances - the science fiction plot is there to make it crazy, and very necessary to keep things moving, but I don't think it's the primary theme at all.
