Very cool project! Wouldn't it be also possible to get the yarn back from the final product and maybe knit it back into a different pattern? The yarns should be the same length. You could wear your custom scarf with text on one day and re knit the yarn into a different message
@MartinMakesThings7 күн бұрын
That's actually a wonderful idea! There would be knots in the yarn, and the yarn would deteriorate a bit over time from being unwound, and it would involve some manual work, but it would definitely be possible to do it.
@Rabidazell12 күн бұрын
It was interesting to be suggested this, and I just have to mention openknit, which is a great textbook example of what happens when you pursue open source textile automation. You *disappear off the face of the earth*. Maybe certain countries are less paranoid about the tech these days because they've got theirs.

@emilyrln13 күн бұрын
Omg this is so cool! Since it can handle 3 strands, could you do 3-color designs by swapping out which yarn acts as the scaffold, or would that undermine structural integrity? There would also be the matter of implementing a third color in the design software, but maybe the user could outline areas with a selection tool (or target all black or white pixels within that area) and toggle what colors the white and black values have, or you could implement a 50% gray value in the threshold and do rough gradients? So many possibilities!! My mom has a metal sock knitting machine and it's so fun to crank the handle and watch it zoom around the circle 😂
@MartinMakesThings12 күн бұрын
Haha, it's awesome to see how limitations can inspire creative thinking! Here's a little secret, I'm currently testing out multiple colors for the next video 🙂

I seem to recall that the first known example of a Turing machine, a reprogrammable computer, was a water powered, multicolor, weaving machine, somewhere in China in the 200's, if I recall correctly. It was a six color graphics processor, basically, that read patterns from bamboo plates strung together, like punch cards. And now we have come full circle, with the weaving having become only a novel use case.

@xIsouLcruSHca14 күн бұрын
Man you are an absolute genius! Do you have tips on how to design moving mechanisms when you need a certain motion? Like you have your requirement for the feederhead to do that specific movement, how do you get to the oval shape? Are there any books or resources you have found to be helpful in learning more about the design process of multiple part objects?
@MartinMakesThings13 күн бұрын
When I need a specific motion, I usually doodle it out on paper, then test it out in my 3D program. After that, I print it out and check if any adjustments are necessary, I iterate and print a lot!. If you are looking for mechanical inspiration, there are some great KZbinrs creating animations of all kinds of mechanical mechanisms. I actually also just ordered (haven't received it yet) an old book called "Mechanical Movements, Devices and Appliances" which is supposedly filled with such mechanisms for inspiration.

This is incredible! I would love to have one of these setups myself. Ive played with the idea of getting a knitting machine, but they are just so expensive. Would you consider selling the designs?
@MartinMakesThings13 күн бұрын
Hi, the design for the machine will be free for non commercial use (if you want to print it yourself), and I might sell a kit with the needed components. But I have to be honest and say that the reason these plastic knitting machines are cheaper is due to their quality and flexibility. They are probably best labeled as capable toys 🙂
