Hello, my first xun arrived yesterday. When ordering, I chose the G key. I thought I will get a low G(Sol) , but with all the holes closed, the sound is re (D) Soo i don't understand - is it a mistake of xun maker or i dont know much about xuns? Then what should be the letter on the Xun so that with all the holes closed there would be the sound of low G ?

Xun "pronounced as Shwin" was mentioned to me by my student coz our topic was about Traditional Instruments. She said Chinese people had been using it more than 7,000 years ago so it's displayed in their museums. I asked her if there are still people who play it and want to hear how it sounds so I ended up to this video and making this comment. LoL! I love it and if given the chance to learn how to play it, I'd surely grab that opportunity! Love it!

Xun is not pronounced as "shwin". I'm not sure why you'd feel the need to include that in your comment, even if it were correct. Yoyo Chinese has a good pinyin chart if you want to know how to actually pronounce xun. It should be possible, but depending on the tuning of the ocarina you may have to transpose it.

How did u learn the xun? I can't seem to get the embochure right to hit the notes past the first two... Also, how did u get the sound so round.... Does the xun only have one octave?

Greetings. First, you must have a good quality xun. Some are simply just about impossible to play. Saying that though, they do take quite a bit of practice. I have a few Imperial City Ocarina xuns, and they have a range of about 1.3 octaves, such as C through F for example, including all accidentals, especially the 11 hole models, which do not require any half holing. It took me about two weeks playing everyday for around an hour to play the whole range of my first xun. It was a bass C from ICO, which I bought used from someone who had given up on it. :) The xun is very rewarding once you get the hang of it. :) Persevere! :)

To reach higher register on your xun, you have to increase the increase the breathpressure...

Is Xun like other rim blown flutes such as Shakuhachi, Xiao, or Ansazi flute where a skilled player can get 2-3 octaves out of the instrument by overblowing into the upper register?

Beautiful instrument and sound. However, this is not "Horserace." This is the theme song from the movie "The Myth." It is sung by Jackie Chan and Kim Hee-Seon. Horse race is a completely different song. Of Mongolian origin I believe?
