i kind of think the engine should have a tear down for the stoppage.

Thanks Patric, there are three reasons I chose not to go down that path: 1. The engine was at idle at the time of the prop strike, during landing. 2. The propeller was made from fibreglass and shattered. A metal prop would have shocked the crankshaft. 3. The gearbox has a built in clutch that would have absorbed any shock to the crankshaft.

I usually do wheelies in taildraggers if possible. The new radial Renegade might have to be either three pointers or tail low wheelies. The prop clearance simply isn't sufficient.

It's nice to see that you're back in Peru! It sounds like you'll be there through the holidays. I hope that you stay longer and make more videos. I'm sorry that you're selling your planes. I've been hoping to take one of my planes to Peru. I've been to Peru many times and have an apartment in Lima.

Hi Ken, I can recommend Santa Maria as a base to operate from. It cost me quite a bit to bring the Renegade here from Canada, it wasn't just the freight costs the government had their hand out for mo ey at every turn. What aircraft were you thinking of bringing to Peru? Maybe you can rent or join a syndicate here. I would really like to take the Renegade back to Australia but I'd probably have to pay the same or more to take it back out of Peru.

I really don't want to make travel videos in Peru. I'm not here on holidays so I won't be visiting any of the typical tourist attractions. I feel the day to day stuff is a bit boring for, mostly aviation types.

Thanks Nadeth, I've been doing that type of commentary for my friends at my home airport. It's going to be a bit difficult to make it presentable for KZbin. I came to Peru to sell two of my aeroplanes before getting back to Australia to concentrate on my Australian aeroplanes. Yes, the coastal strip of Peru has very little rainfall, as a matter of fact in the north of Chile there are places that have NEVER recorded rainfall! Peru isn't quite that bad but as an example for the first 5 years I was here I never had to use the windscreen wipers on anything above intermittent! Let me see what I can do

How do you like that Rotec so far?
@pauloconnor2813
@pauloconnor2813 2 ай бұрын
I'm pretty happy to have the Rotec. It looks the part on the aeroplane and it certainly looks better than the Verner. The Verner is about $4k more expensive but on the plus side the Verner is 14kg lighter, it doesn't use a reduction gearbox like the Rotec. Of course my Rotec hasn't fired a shot in anger yet, hopefully that won't be too far away.

I’ve just now found your site. Looks like a great project. What kind of resin did you use for your cowl? I’ve recently completed a Hatz Classic with an R3600 and constructed a similar boot cowl as you. Mine does not come as close to the exhaust collector ring as yours does tho. I used a high heat resin that is good to 250F and have had no trouble with heat coming off the collector ring so far after several test flights.
@pauloconnor2813
@pauloconnor2813 2 ай бұрын
Welcome, I hope I can keep you interested although I suspect I'd be more likely to learn from you rather than the other way around. The cowl was made using slow cure epoxy reson. To be honest I don't expect any issues at all with heat on the cowel. The stainless steel heatshield is about 95% decorative and 5% functional. You just can't see the finished aircraft like I can. If I can keep the heatshied from tarnishing it should really make the whole engine area pop. Do you have any pics you'd like to share of your project? You can email me on [email protected] if you'd like to share. I'm located about 450km inland from Sydney Australia.

Check the gaps in the valve springs between the coils, the Rotecs Achilles heel is binding of the valve spring.
@pauloconnor2813
@pauloconnor2813 2 ай бұрын
The only two practical choices I had were the Verner and the Rotec. The Verner is lighter, mostly since it doesn't have a reduction gearbox. The Verner is way less attractive, not that it matters too much. Lastly the Verner is around $4k more expensive here in Australia. Given my time over I'd probably make the same decision. Let's see what pans out over the next couple of years.

I've heard that one of the problems was weak pushrods but if you're saying the problem is more valve spring coil binding. Wouldn't that problem show itself from day one? You don't think it would be more caused by over reving? Thanks for the heads-up, I'll bring hyper alert to valve/pushrod issues.

@pauloconnor2813 2 ай бұрын
I'm going as fast as I can. You're 100% correct about the fuel tanks. It'll be an absolute miracle if they don't leak, even though I thoroughly cleaned all the components of the tank, including a final wash with acetone, even the rivets. Some of the gaps between the components were a tall order to ask the proseal to bridge. Where possible I reduced the gaps with metal pieces then prosealed but, like I say, if they DON'T leak it'll be a miricle. Thanks for watching, if you want to see anything specific just let me know and I'll do my best to show whatever it is.

Me too, it's been a long time coming. I've had the kit for about 15 years but I was working outside of Australia for most of that time so progress was slow to nonexistent. I'm into it now that I'm retired. I really want it flying by the end of our summer, it's the beginning of spring right now!

I had to cut my own 3” tape on the “bias” to get it to lay properly between my fuselage’s spine and V-stab. One 300mm section required 3 attempts and 7h of work to get one that looked good.

@pauloconnor2813
@pauloconnor2813 4 ай бұрын
No, I didn't consider the Verner until fairly recently, after I'd bought and paid for the Rotec. The Verner is lighter since it doesn't have a reduction gearbox. On the negative the Verner isn't as attractive as the rotec and in Australia the Verner is about $4k more expensive. If I were to make the same decision today I'd still choose the Rotec. Good question though, ask me again in a couple of years I might have a different answer but I hope not.

@pauloconnor2813
@pauloconnor2813 5 ай бұрын
Yes, progressing along. I haven’t identified exactly what the root cause of the problem is with the Renegade is suffice to say that something came adrift in the alternator area, damaged some of the rotating parts and I assume would have damaged the stator as well so I bought another seized engine for spare parts. I’ll get on to it pretty soon as the open cockpit flying days are getting closer every day. Thanks for watching.

@pauloconnor2813

You need to have two joins, one at the leading edge, the other at the trailing edge. On a small component like an aileron for instance you could wrap the fabric all the way around and put the joins at the T.E. but it isn’t quite as easy as it sounds.

Is the Rotec mounted directly on center? I always thought that the engine had to be 3 degree off center due to the direction of prop turning/thrust???
@pauloconnor2813
@pauloconnor2813 10 ай бұрын
To be honest, I really don't know for sure but it won't matter for what I'm trying to do with the cowls. Some designers choose to canter the engine centerline off a few degrees but Murphy chose to move the leading edge of the fin off to one side, depending on the rotation of the engine. I don't remember the exact measurement but it was something like 1/2". My RV6 has the fin on the centerline and the engine a few degrees off like you say but you wouldn't want both methods of correction on the same aeroplane.

Love your homemade wheel chocks!!! Is the front wheel widths the same for the 582 and the Rotec?? It looks like the Rotec Spirit wheel stance is wider than your older 582 Renegade 2.
@pauloconnor2813
@pauloconnor2813 10 ай бұрын
That’s right, the wheel track is not the same. The 582 is 58” and the Rotec is 68”. The Rotec Renegade required much longer undercarriage legs and also much heavier. The extra length is required since the Rotec swings a much larger prop. Even with the longer undercarriage, the prop clearance is barely sufficient.
