All pretty good picks. The only one I haven't seen from your list is is Hanasaku Iroha. Last year one of my recommendations from anime planet's Secret Santa event was Golden Kamuy, at the time it was completely off of my radar. It is obvious that the writers have a passion for hunting and survival skills that are brought to life through Asirpa while the average Joe like me is allowed to relate to the main character's more laymen perspective.

@@Eternalwarpuppy Yeah, Golden Kamuy definitely has the feel of a passion project with all the info they throw in about Ainu culture. I keep hoping that last season will get a release date with each new anime season... but nothing yet. 😮💨

I think the reason why the show doesn't make sense and none of the characters are likable is that this is the English version of what is essentially a Japanese toy commercial.
@duckielover15112 күн бұрын
@gophersmith I feel like that can be said for a lot of childhood anime, though. (Digimon had some pretty fantastic characters... even the original Zoids was miles better than this.) I'd say this one in particular was kind of a flop... but a lot of people seemed to love it still so... Matter of taste, I guess.

I read the manga but haven't seen the anime. One of the highlights for me was the short friend that Urabe unwillingly hangs out with. She usually tried to push the progress forward but was rarely successful. I thought the ending was nice, but there wasn't much development. The author said a kiss was originally planned, but by the end, he felt it was no longer needed.

Interesting... It's one of those series I'm not terribly compelled to read the manga for, so it's nice to know it doesn't sound like I'm really missing out on anything. ^^' I didn't bring her up in the review, but Urabe does have one friend in the anime... the girl dating Tsubaki's best friend. ...Who honestly seemed more into Urabe than her boyfriend. ^^'

@spoonflaps12 The character relationships are good... the story was honestly kind of ridiculous a lot of the time. Like the mystery that ended in them realizing Nagisa had Siesta's heart? Thanks for covering this! I also hardly ever see this film get much discussion, so it's always great to see people who want to talk about it! The "incest" storyline definitely never felt like bait to me, ik people may dislike it but I'd argue it actually contains plenty of legit historical basis regarding Japan at the time. Due to a significant destruction of family records, post-war Japan was fraught with plenty of instances where people did not know who their extended or even their close relatives were. Amidst the confusion there were more than a few cases where people ended up crushing on close relations unwittingly.

I agree. I also thought that the Kvels were representative of the Jewish population. We were introduced to the Kvels by some anonymous person or group’s hatred of the Cafe Master’s success in business. Heine talked about their ancient kingdom falling into ruin thousands of years ago, dispersing the populace. Yet despite moving to other countries and a millennia passing, it seems as though they’ve never fully integrated themselves into those countries. Despite being born and raised in those countries, there’s a huge sense of “other,” like there wasn’t much mixing (ethnic wise anyways, obviously they’ve become a part of the community through business, working with a befriending the natives, contributing the same way as any other regular citizen). It lines up a lot with what we’ve seen with what the Jewish diaspora had to put up with in the past. And I agree, it’s not a representation you see often in Japanese media. It made me appreciate the story a bit more since it gave it more depth, and made the lessons of becoming a leader multidimensional and realistic. Not too surprised tho, we see in the beginning with Bruno, his thesis often mentioned the country’s multi-ethnic strives of equality, developing the government to fit modern development, etc. The author did a good job adding layers to what could’ve been a simple, cute story

Jo i want to start watching animes. Is this a good starter anime ? Or should i watch something else and watch this later ?or is it so good that it will set my expectations too high for other animes?
@duckielover15111 ай бұрын
I definitely wouldn't consider it a bad starter anime! The only shows I don't recommend as 'starters' are the kinds that are very heavy on things like Japanese culture/plays on the language. Things that a foreign fan will likely pick up over time but will probably go over their heads if they're new to the scene. I recently reviewed an anime called Hyouka. I think it was a great anime, but it's not one I would recommend to a new fan for exactly that reason. There are also shows that have a lot of tropes that anime fans grow kind of immune to over time... but may seem totally out there and a little off-putting to a new fan. And Violet Evergarden really doesn't contain anything like that, so it's safe on that front... Depending on what you're into... Erased is a really great time travel/murder mystery series that's also free of those kinds of things. If you're into the slower, deep moments, life lessons with just a hint of magic kind of shows, I can't recommend Fruits Basket enough. (The remake specifically.) I don't want to bombard you too much with information/recommendations... There are so many different flavors of anime out there, that what I'd recommend you start with really depends on the kind of genres you're looking for, but I hope this helps!.

Honestly i was bored and apathetic watching this anime. A lot of anime fans think if a show makes you sad or cry it means it is great and a lot of anime makers caught on so they stuff their shows with cheap emotional manipulation instead of good characters writing. Violet ever garden felt like that the creators were screaming at me to cry while waving Christmas decorations in front of my face.
@duckielover151 Жыл бұрын
I get what you mean. Years ago, I really struggled to enjoy Angel Beats because it felt like their emotional moments were so forced or rushed. Overall, I think Violet Evergarden was good. Her growth over time was good. But a lot of the minor characters would get these monologues at the end of their episodes where they just spoke to the audience about how meeting Violet had changed their lives... and THAT grew to be kind of insufferable. The wrong side of cheesy. Something the audience could see for themselves without needing to reinforce it.
@fahaadbandar Жыл бұрын
@@duckielover151 i had the same issue with angel beats myself. I see a lot of anime feel the need to explain everything to the audience like they are brain dead i wish they would have a little faith instead that the audience can get it on their own.

@duckielover151 Жыл бұрын
Yeah... I've been thinking about it a lot though! And ironically, I think they could have made it work if they'd given the bank characters-- the president especially-- a storyline for us to follow up to that point. Because that's how they try to smooth it over: that the guy in charge is a little eccentric himself and would get on board with a crazy plot like that. But that just doesn't really work when it hinges on a character you introduced 10 seconds ago. (But of course, they couldn't make time for that when they were making such a point that movies should only be 90 minutes long...)

At this point, writing the review is just like... the last stage in watching the show. The process wouldn't feel complete without it. And I feel like it's aided me just in general as a person who consumes media, to have to organize my thoughts like this and determine what influenced my overall opinion on a show. It's actually really disappointing how all the online sentiment around this movie seem to echo distaste and disdain for the abundance of tropes and the lack of depth in it's sci-fi elements. I truely feel like both of these aspects of the movie are deeply intentional and serve to spotlight the themes that are core to it's message. I'd agree the execution of this movie will not speak to a majority of people, but this movie truely puts poetry before everything. As a literacy and poetry nerd, I found this movie by hitting the random anime button on crunchyroll years ago, and to this day it holds up as one of my top picks. To me, it is the Everything Everywhere All At Once anime.
@RogerSmith2004 Жыл бұрын
I think it's an excellent film, but I also believe it's even more interesting if you are familiar with the original story (or at least the Obayashi film) and how this entry kind of builds upon that story. I also think the English title is kind of a poor translation, since the phrase 'Psychic School Wars' sets very different expectations (over the original title which would be more or less translated to 'The Targeted School', leaving a bit more up to interpretation). Director Nakamura didn't want to have all of this exposition in the last part of the movie, so I think that does end up making it a lot more alienating, but I also feel like that lets the film kind of speak for itself and asks the audience to pick up on the subtle details of it, and makes additional watches a lot more rewarding as a result.
@duckielover151 Жыл бұрын
You know, I'm glad to see other people enjoyed it. This conversation has been interesting to read. I like seeing other perspectives.
