It was actually either a CPR in progress or a downed cop or firefighter and patrol units were blocking the intersections for the rescue truck to get to the hospital quicker.

They are sending the engine due to the fact that it is a ALS truck (Advanced Life Support)

@@GR_Responses That is perhaps an oversimplified answer. Let's delve deeper. 1. Who thinks letting people suffer or die is a good plan when there's a fire station close by in the neighborhood? 2. "Sometimes it takes a village." Ever hear that one? Well this village comes to you when you're sick or injured & need immediate help. They come with training & equipment & manpower to get you stable enough to survive til the ambulance or helicopter can get you to the ER. 3. If they're away from the station & finishing up on another call, then there's a call for a house fire, factory explosion, car crash, airplane down, etc, well they've got all they need to respond directly to help in the next incident, whatever it may be. And yes, they're ALS.
