I'm Austrian and this is how the girls are married off in my family, whether they want it or not. Some old rhytes are still there although aristocracy has been abolished. It's all politics. Franz Josef certainly fell in love with her and with time, he loved her but she didn't love him. It was his will to marry her and she had to comply and be grateful that the Emperor of Austria loved her. She had no choice. I know this movie in and out and still watch it, but reality was different.

Why was Sissi assassinated??? Her life was so tragic...The Crown Prince's Murder/Suicide, Franz Josef unfaithful (which is shocking) the marriage ending up being unhappy, the death of her first born Sophie. The *Theft* of her first born Sophie by her Mother-in-law. All of her pain and sacrifice, only to be murdered and for what?!

One of the more shameful aspects of the Hapsburg family is the way they treated Sophie, the wife of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Emperor Franz Joseph did not want his nephew marrying a commoner (maybe he thought her normal looking chin would mess up the family photographs?), so he insisted on a morganatic marriage. Franz Ferdinand had to swear an oath in church that his children would not sit on the throne. When the Archduke was shot, Sophie tried to shield him, and she wound up getting killed herself. Were the Austrians grateful for her sacrifice? Not at all. She received a lesser funeral than her husband. The Emperor was privately relieved at his nephew’s assassination, because now, there was no danger of his children taking the throne. Yet, the old pig plunged Europe into the First World War, so that the peasants could die for his wounded vanity.

Sophie was actually not a commoner but a Czech Countess, but still not good enough for Franz Joseph.

So much is incorrect here. It wasn't FJ's "vanity" that caused Sophie to be treated the way she was but centuries of tradition and regulations/protocol. (Also Sophie was NOT a commoner) There is no evidence of Sophie trying to shield FF, it happened too quickly, also FF was shot first, indicating that no "shielding" took place. FF's kids couldn't have inherited the crown anyway, it was part of the settlement allowing him to marry Sophie. (FF also COULD have...ya know...just dropped his claim to the throne for Sophie's sake. He didn't. Hmmmmmmm) And FJ NEVER wanted another war after Koenigraetz in 1866. PLEASE open a book before posting such drivel.

Serbia started the war. They sent the terrorists to assasinate Franz Ferdinand because they believed a war against austria (wich they knew would have the support of the russians) would benefit them in stealing austrian land, and in the end, the treacherous italians gave them it
