"Not seeing the forest for the trees" refers to when a person fails to see the big picture because he/she is too focused on the specific elements of a situation. In that expression, the word "for" can be understood as "because." An example is: Suppose you won $10 million in the lottery. But you start thinking about how if you take the lump sum, you only get $5 million. Then half of that is paid in taxes, so you wind up with $2.5 million of a $10 million jackpot. So you start complaining about getting "only" $2.5 million. Well, you could be described as not seeing the forest (big picture) for the trees (all of the different elements of the situation), because you're focused on how the jackpot is reduced rather than the fact that you just won the lottery. Hope that helps anyone!

Not for maybe 5 or 6 years now. I did some throughout the first few years on KZbin before my hearing got really bad. They should be clearly labeled "whispered" or "whispering" in the title if you go to my video tab on my channel and sort by oldest!
