Its no wonder I was pulling my hair out, the camera pre amps. What settings do you usually use for lets say a talking head? The lowest mine will go to is a -6 and I set my camera to -12db? Thanks.

What I do is I set the mics to 0dB and then bring my camera down to about -20dB, then I get a balanced sound. OR I put the cam on 0dB and put the mic on the "safety" setting with the left channel on -10dB and then the right channel is on -16dB for backup. Either way, I make sure I hit record on the transmitter itself for backup audio and using "Voice Isolator" in Davinci Resolve Studio, is ALWAYS a life-saver!

@@WhySteve Damn I got the free version of davinci and voice isolation isnt part of it. The farthest my camera can go is -12. So is this right? 1. Set mic to 0db (mono?) 2. Set camera to -10 or 12 3. Have subject press record. 4. Clap in front of camera. 5. Sync in post.

@@LycanVisuals if the mic is connected to the camera there is no need to sync in post (except if you record onboard), it's a matter of what camera you have exactly... just listen to the output from the camera and adjust the levels accordingly. Keep noise below 25dB, dialogue between -15dB and -8dB and the rest you can clean up with Noise Reduction and EQ. Good luck!

@@WhySteve Due to the camera amps I think ill stick with onboard because I cant stand the background hiss. My camera is a panasonic g85 so its pretty old and can only go to -12 so ill work with what I can get.

I was being filmed in complete darkness in the woods with a key light, a practical and other lights but kept getting my shadow. Turned on the headlights from the car and it was better. I’m thinking I need another key light to eliminate the shadow. Perhaps that nugget you dropped about Stanley’s film will help after I check it out. Thanks.

Wow, sounds like quite a setup! You can also get reflector panels and bounce the keylight into the shadkw side to fill. It all depends on the look you want! But in you can get a wide aputure lens paired with a powerful large light source, you are sorted!
