Finally someone mentions John Margiotta! I was bored with the clean style everyone tries to achieve, and after I've seen his works, I had to start painting miniatures. He singlehandedly sparked my interest in painting and I thank him for that.
@metalafminisАй бұрын
Yep, his stuff is so good

Great advises! I do agree with final statement, that having deadline actually helps with building motivation to push yourself (unless you happen to be a procrastinator that oscillates between "Eh, next week" and "PANIK!" modes. Like me!). It even works for smaller commitments, like "I have a league games in two weeks, let's paint the army till X days before that, in case I need extra day or two to fix things or push some extra details".
@metalafminisАй бұрын
hahaha I know the panic well

I was waiting for you to say combine 2 or more of these strategies. E.g. a sick conversion in a less-popular category.
@metalafminisАй бұрын
I thought about getting into talking about potential combinations, but that would take it into a weird infinite spiral.

Another tip for even your local painting competition meta.... if your a great painter, teach your kid to enter young guns category
@metalafminisАй бұрын
The kids are so good today, it's insane. The level is better than the level that was winning regular Demons 15 years ago.
@SASdcleaverАй бұрын
@metalaf1136 right! It's insane. I taught my daughter recently to paint and she's already won my local painting contest at a large LGS in a big city, haven't won myself yet though. 4 categories being reds choice (judge choice), fan fave, most thematic, and young guns.

No BS vibes...also you look like you're about to talk trench crusade with this lighting/framing/outfit and I'd be cool with that too

100% on the Play the Categories strategey, I put a large monster entry in at adepticon 2024 and got a finalist pin...It was not finished, but there were so few entries that year that is crept into the top 25%. I love your analyses, I agree with all of them, and I'm already planning on entering that mini that gets release Thursday night next year :D Mossy rock meta FTW!

@@metalafminis No way, really? Was joking around thinking it was background that was put in during editing 🤣. Or one you can choose when on a video call for example.

The "Pick a new mini and you have a higher chance of winning" believe turns out to be very persistent. So many biases at work at the same time. Thanks for calling it out here Ben!

I believe more true is "Pick EXPENSIVE mini and paint it"... which mean "pick any Games Workshop mini" ;)

Hoping you not retiring from GD (or come out of retirement somewhere in the future), because your pieces are awesome Ben! I know it's a kind of selfish statement, but I hope you take it as a compliment as well.

Thanks... I am actually planning a 2025 piece, but unfortunately we don't actually have a Chicago 2025 announcement yet, so fingers crossed for that.

6:54 I have noticed that a lot of successful painters have said that they keep starting late, then rushing at the end and afterwards promising themselves that they will start earlier next time only to find out that they started late again. In my dayjob I have seen a trend that some people might want to start on time, but their performance is actually better if the start a little later. Somehow the stress that crunchtime triggers might feel bad, but they perform better than when they are relaxed. So the solution might not be to start earlier, but to accept the downside of being stressed as a price for better performance. Only a portion of the population functions better under a deadline. You might potentially fall within this group, or maybe not and starting earlier would actually net you a better result.
@metalafminisАй бұрын
The deadline may help the miniature, but literally every other area of my personal life struggles 😬, so it's not a great tradeoff.
@WijkertАй бұрын
Very interesting to hear your insights on GD and your entries. The diorama was very impressive! I only now found this video, but remember the diorama well and also that it got damaged during judging.
@WijkertАй бұрын
2:05 what kind of issues did the back of the cloak have, if you don't mind sharing?
@metalafminisАй бұрын
There was a weird glossy area that wouldn't seem to matte down, which made the blends look weird... had I spent a few hours more, I could have potentially fixed that issue, although that was probably one of a few things holding it back.

Nah .. Dioramas suck IMHO, outside of the Diorama category. I dont like them in other models .. I think its too much show off on the things that arn't the Citadel model. . Iv only ever entered 1 Golden Daemon 2007 Kholn Games Day. only got 81 points on my model. My personal Bias. Models must be a usable game token. So enjoy this down vote as your clip title was stupid clickbait.. I was expecting comedy. like "Paint your first Golden Deamon winner " .. Classic Video..
@marcotitoguareschi20752 ай бұрын
Man, it's an awesome piece, really but, if i can give you a suggestion about the video is this: take the mouth a few inch away from microphone or take a pop filter to improve the audio. Love, u are great painter, love frome italy!

"A beautiful diorama, I really like it. Just a suggestion for next time: the muzzle flash should also come out of the hole on the side of the muzzle, not just from the front, as it would make it more realistic."

You know you really shouldn’t use bs clickbait titles like that when your trying to grow your channel. It’s universally hated, so why do it? Obviously to get clicks but at what cost? 30 seconds of watch time?

I love this! But I honestly thought Golden Demon pieces need to be GW minis. Do 3D printed minis and pieces not count as 3rd party?
@metalafminis5 ай бұрын
Anything scratchbuilt is legal. Anything not GW or not sculpted by the entrant is illegal, regardless of whether it's a cast made by another vendor, or some random STL you found to print.

Your space hulk entry was by far the best at Adepticon + should have won. The slayer sword winner was nowhere near worthy of the name; yours was so much more inventive + atmospheric + had so much more skill involved. I think you were robbed [el'sda2].
