I wished the Dart had a stronger current. I think 10 k in almost still water is a lot to me.

I really enjoyed the Dart 10K swim series and the trail running videos. I do sea swimming and trail running as well. Currently out of action until the doctors work out what is causing my heart arrhythmia. Are you still swimming and trail running?

Amazing video Mark! It's so great that you share your love for swimming, it is such an amazing water sport and it's lovely to see you enjoy it, keep going with these great videos. If it doesn't bother you, I'd like to give you a suggestion, a tip for the next videos: Basically, you could try inserting some comic and funny stuff... to give everyone a pinch of humor that, in the world of swimming, diving and all water activities, can never be missing. Now, I don't think much of it, but the first thing I could think of in your sport might be peeing in the water. Once, my uncle, who is a scuba diver, peed in his wetsuit during a long diving session and that moment was absolutely funny, he even wrote "I’m peeing" on a waterproof notebook during the session. He has always been telling me that there are 2 types of divers and swimmers: those who pee in the water and those who lie. I know it may sound strange as a request but, in my opinion, these are moments of happiness and carefree that always make everyone smile. I hope you like the idea and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Thanks for the advice K, but it’s bad enough that I’m probably going to be asked to wear a paper hat at Christmas😉. Only joking. My son says the same. I’m quite a jolly person till I turn a camera on myself and he wonders why I look so serious. Btw, I don’t think I’ve ever not peed in my wetsuit😂

Do you with or against the current? 😲
@MarksTandS

The current is on our side. They always set off downstream at high tide, and it was a high spring tide. To do that distance, which was actually 6.7 miles, would normally take me 4 hours 24 minutes (at my sustainable 40 minute per mile open water pace), but I did it in 3 hours 9 minutes.

Cheers Mark. Nice to know it’s not just family subscribing, pretending they’re interested in my trails and swims🤣. I’m planning to do the Dart 10k again and I have booked a professional swim analysis session in and endless pool later this month, to see if I can get past the pace I’ve been stuck at for a couple of years. I enjoy running trails especially when I can have a swim somewhere along the route. I’m a great admirer of @Run4Adventure and trail running (not roads), and was toying with the idea of a long organised run. I tend to do 10 miles on the moors and coast, maybe if I get fast enough (I’m very slow) and extend my distance I could aim to join one of the local ultra marathons. Maybe not though, just a dream currently, I’ll just see what I’ve got in me in that department. Lots of trails and swims (combined) planned though. That’s my bag I think.

Results are published. I might give up this fierce independence and get some formal technique lessons ready for next year. Not a bad result for an old git like me, but moving up a couple of pages would be nice: results.sporthive.com/events/7102977516394638592/races/2

Well done Marky Huge thank you for the mention 🙂 What a good time you did it in, you must be sooo proud. I must admit I felt the same as you the first time I did it, actually I was so fed up I just got changed and got the first coach back. The advent was so well organized and it was a great day (the only one I did and thought actually this isn't too bad) I actually enjoyed the choppy last mile and you are absolutely right it was about 6.6-7 miles. Hopefully you and your friend can take a well deserved rest. If you do decide to do it next and need some training buddies/ideas let me know. Take care Marky and possibly see you out swimming 👍

Wow! Well done. 3 hours 9 minutes for me. Well done mate. Great conditions but I was quite tired by the time we got across the open choppy water. I’m quite keen to get a gold hat like yours though (my envy comes out in video I’ve just posted🤣), so I’ll be up for it next year. Maybe catch up for some training swims together.

Hi Mark, well done with the training! Pace is looking good. Me too doing the Dart10k on the Saturday. Any idea how much current we'll have on the day? The 10k guide says to prepare for 8k in training so I'm guessing the current is gonna take us 2k downstream or thereabouts. Any recommendations for a good set of goggles? So keep it up, all looking good....regards Richard (Bristol) 🏊‍♂️
@MarksTandS
@MarksTandS Жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, thanks. I was hoping for 5 miles at the end of last week, but I came down with a cold. It explains why I struggled so much on Saturday just doing 2.5 miles. Hopefully I’ll do it this Thursday, though I’m still wheezy, and I hope that’s the last cold I get before the event is over! 5 miles is the most I’ll be doing before dropping off and focusing on stroke and pace over shorter swims before the event. You’re right that that’s all that is generally recommended for 10k swims. Adrenaline will get us through that last mile to the 6.2 mile mark🤞. No idea what the current is like because I’ve not done it before (they cancelled it when I entered last year), but a friend who has done it before suggested there’s a big assist. Goggles are very personal depending upon your face I find. Zoggs Predator Flex have always suited me brilliantly. Good luck with your training and the swim. Looks fun, can’t wait.

@@MarksTandS it’s going to be a big tide on that weekend so will have a significant effect on the swim. I am local and swim down the river a couple of times most years, to the point now where I’m not even really training for it, just being generally active because I know that the tide will always get me through it. Such a shame about the cancellation last year, I swam it on the day and it was pretty rough on the more open stretches so I think the right call was made given that some entrants may have never seen chop before.

Hey Mark Last time I did it I never swam over 4.5 miles. However this year struggling to get any distance in. The conditions haven't been in our favour, I have been training in the plym estuary and is roughly 3.4 round trip. Hopefully conditions on the day will be with us 🫣 5.6m tidal flow should help. Good luck buddy.

Thanks. Haha, that’s great advice, particularly as “what should we have for tea?” is a daily stressful question in our household! I’d planned to do the 10k unofficially with a friend after it was cancelled, but we couldn’t get dates in sync. It’s a beautiful river, can’t wait!

Hi Sean. We met in the winter when I was accompanying my swimming buddy Alex on his polar bear challenge. We discussed that rough breakwater swim (2020, the last to Tinside😱) and local places to swim in bad weather (thanks for the advice). I tend to fit training around family and work commitments (and weather!) so I’m a bit unpredictable, but if I see you down there I’ll tag along. Thanks for the invite. And likewise. Alex and I plan to do laps along the Jennycliffe coast and Kingsand/Cawsand too, to beat the weather: worked last year. We’re on the Sunday at the 10k in September, is that the same for you?
