@ John Smith: At the 10 minute mark: We were climbing up the Flourspar Hills. The turbo pipe had broken and as a consequence we lacked adequate power to climb the Hills and were forced to 'slip' the clutch. We eventually made it to service at the tarmac at the end of the climb and were fortunate to change the broken pipe without loss of time on the proceeding 'Transport / Liasion' Road Section. Shifting below 4,000 rpm : We had siezed the original engine built for the Safari two days before the event. We purchased a spanking brand new engine from STI that was crated but not 'run-in'. The Japanese STI engineer who built the engine assuared us that the engine would last if we ran it in properly for a 1,000 kms. before 'pushing it' over 5,000 rpm. We really had no time between fitting the engine and the start of the event. All we managed was a 200 km. test run to ensure the engine ran well. As Ranjit and I were really very desperate to finish the Safari we decided that the best option was to drive gently and go easy on the engine for mostf of the four day event. If you will furnish me with your email address [send as a message to my in-box to safeguard your privacy], I will try and look for some photographs with a short write-up of the event.

I have 2 of these cars with the ea82. an 87 and a 93. I've driven the 87 across the country twice and I drove the 93 over 3 hours at over 5k rpms. Both run excellent. I was wondering, what happened to the car at the 10 minute mark where it was being revved and clutch dropped repeatedly. Deep sand? I didn't see any wheels spinning. Curious. Also, how come, for the most part, it seems like the car was never being wound out while accelerating. It seems like it's being shifted below 4k rpms. This footage is tremendously valuable to have on here and thanks for posting it. It's IMPOSSIBLE to find any footage of the RX in action, and there are few pictures. Awesome stuff. There is a huge community of die hard L-series subarus online and you can see our cars here; www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/forum/60-members-rides/

@Rafael Castillo : The RX Turbo was a good reliable car in its day. Perhaps still a good option for the Clubman starting his rallying carear!

No, except for the gear lever which fell off, the gear box was intact. The lack of power was as a result of a broken Turbo Pipe which we replaced at Iten.
