Much as I would love to visit Argentina, and enjoy more rides behind these magnificent locomotives, I would be miffed if I went all the way there to get 1933, as I need 1931 for sight and for haulage. Sadly I also need 1936 for haulage and she was shipped there to provide spare parts. Nice that they got more use in Argentina, but I deeply miss these in Portugal.

Much as I would love to go to Argentina, I would be pretty miffed if I went all the way to Argentina and got 1933, as I need 1931 ! Loco 1931 is so rare, I still need it for sight ! Nice these magnificent locos saw more use in Argentina. Apart from poor old 1936 which was shipped there for spares and I need her for haulage ! Even better if both 1931 and 1936 were still used on passenger trains in Portugal. Simply because I cannot fly to Buenos Aires in 2 hours.

Some great sights and (English electric) sounds. Those Soframe dmus are still the mainstay of Algarve coast line services almost 30 years later! A few captions (what and where) would make it an even more valuable record.

Great video. I enjoyed the cab ride. Also how do trains know when to cross roads or let another train pass? In Canada we have crossing light and bells for the roads for people and cars and signals light to get give trains permission to use the tracks.
@vicsams4431
@vicsams4431 Жыл бұрын
There are colour light signals around the main cities like Lisboa and Porto. But rural lines have handsignals with crossing attendants with flags for road traffic. Unlike Canada, Portuguese trains are protected by Convel which is their Automatic Train Protection system. I have ridden in the cab of locos in Portugal and Canada. (Plus Britain, France, Spain, Hungary, Austria, Italy.....)

@vicsams4431

Probably the Sud Express (Lisbon to Paris as far as the Spanish border). PTG Tours operated several tours with 1961s. Indeed on one tour, with 1973 + 1965 double headed, I rode in the lead loco. Other cabrides in Portugal, include 1935 "Cidade do Bareirro" and 1805. Whilst cabrides have includes Canada, Hungary, Italy, Spain, France, Austria and Blighty. Not more than 300 cabrides !

Thanks so much for sharing these, I loved Portugal, still do, but the railways aren't the same now, those times were great, I curious pairing of an Alco 1500 and 1200 at 08:10 !!

It's hard saying those were great times for Portuguese trains. It's true it's worse now but tains were already well in decline by that time. And they had been for decades before that. And kept being until today. It's just sad :c

There are few things louder than a 1931 ! Personally, my favourite Portuguese loco. Second only to a French CC72000. Having ridden both a 1931 and a CC72000 in the cab I can confirm they are both brilliant !

1992 was the last year that CP was the only railway company,in 1993 EMEF was created to run the works and in 1997 REFER was created to run the infrastructure(tracks,bridges,signalling,stations...) Those were the days....

1992 was a good year, because that's when i was born xD Good stuff could be seen then. After all, the 90's were still the golden era of public transport. Robust and livelong vehicles like this ones aren't made anymore. Today everything is crap. Let me give you a small update: - Those Mercedes 190D taxis aren't so popular as they were in that year, obviously. However they still can be seen easily; - Those diesel locomotives and similar ones are still used in maneuvering operations and sometimes in freight transport; - The same doesn't apply to the buses. Only 1% or even less of them still exist, and almost all of those belongs to particular entities

It changed a lot in the last 20 years. The square in Porto (at 17 min) is not that green anymore. And unfortunately i've never been on a UTD 0600 train. Now second-hand Spanish trains do the job on the Douro Line. And the branch line are all closed. Very sad :( I hope they will stop the construction of the Tua dam.

Thanks for those comments. There has been a sad decline in the railways of Portugal since I first visited in 1992. I loved most of the diesel types and such a shame the narrow gauge has virtually gone. I was always a bit disappointed when 0600 DMU turned up instead of a 1400 diesel

Tua dam does NOT influence the operation of tua line, the IP/REFER did elevate the line to a higher altitude, and this is possible, if you know some about civil engineering. Thanks From a Civil Enginner student in Faculty of Enginnering of University of Porto (FEUP) and a future minister of transport, who knows

Great video. Was that 1973 or 1972 ? I rode 1973 from Famalicao to Barcelos. 1805 from Tojal to Casa Branca and 1935 from Marco de Canaveses to Regua. Plus CC72139 Paris Est to Troyes, a caravelle, FEVE 1902 in Spain, German 232 and 233 in Hungary, Danish MY in Hungary, M61, M62, and V63 in Hungary, 2143 in Austria, F40PH-2 in Canada, narrow gauge in Italy and 300 odd cabrides in Blighty. The driver of the V63 insisted that I drove !

Having had over 300 cabrides in Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, Austria and Canada, I find it best to ask. If they say 'no' be courteous, but they may say 'yes'. Some countries like Switzerland, you can buy footplate passes. In Hungary, the train driver insisted that I drove the train. Drivers are .it's likely to say 'yes' at small stations were you can get on board, unnoticed.
