Basically, vehicles that get you and/or your stuff from point A to point B in a sensible and efficient manner. Bonus points for fun and style. This happens to apply to a lot of things in The Netherlands.

Very true, their practicality was refreshing. What I loved most is that people don't care what you ride. I was on a pink and purple bike that was falling apart and no one even looked at me twice!
