Grew up riding subways almost everyday in the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s loved every minute of it, but the 70s was the worst of it. Crime and graffiti were out of control, and trains broke down all the time because the city was too broke to maintain them!

Unexpected thing: compared to soviet subway, these old US cars are completely noiseless. Soviet subway roaring like jet fighter.

I rode a lot of those old graffiti trains in the 1980's. By the 1990's the trains didn't have graffiti anymore.

Remember it well. Mechanically the subway system was in much worse shape in the 70s and 80s, but I wasnt scared to take the train. Today it is in better shape mechanically, but I don't feel safe because of the crime, mentally ill homeless, and general disorder and disrespect for the law and other people.

What struck me immediately was how much cooler and durable the automobiles were from that era!! There is a .00003% possibility that a car built today will survive 30 to 40yrs like they did regularly in those days. Only reason that we don't see more today is because the govt had that big cars for cash thing like 10 or 15yrs ago to help the auto industry

No bike lanes bus lanes, trees ( you can actually see up the blocks, architecture character of city), no chairs and tables in middle of avenues, no cement dividers, plant pots, blocked off avenues or streets, basically no clutter, there was nothing wrong with any of that, now narrow European streets..

My mom used to work in the fashion district. We used to live on 28th, Between eight and ninth. It was about 10 years old around this time. You never think about where you grow up. But it was a good time. I used to go to sleep every night looking at the empire state building.. from my window
