The person who takes their own life must be in such a vulnerable or mentally disturbed state that the accused’s actions directly influence them to commit suicide. Emotional distress or heartbreak alone is generally not enough. There must be a clear and proximate connection between the accused’s actions and the victim’s suicide. For example, a court may look for evidence of harassment, threats, or coercion beyond just a relationship breakdown.
