Celtic Football League AKA Celtic Super League I am now proposing the idea of a Celtic Football League between the club sides of the nations of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and possibly the Isle of Man and Cornwall. I have considered a British and Irish Cup before. But I think a Celtic Football League would awaken the sleeping club football potential of Ireland and Wales. The league would contain the leading Scottish sides such as Aberdeen, Celtic, Rangers, Hibernian, Hearts, Dundee United, Motherwell, Dundee and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, plus leading sides chosen by the two Irish leagues, and the Welsh leagues. Why I have changed my mind? I used to think a Celtic Football League was impossible because of the logistics of travelling for the small Welsh and Irish sides. Imagine even a comparatively big Welsh side like Rhyl, who get 3 figure home league attendances, being expected to pay the huge costs of travelling to Scotland and Ireland and back every week or so for away games. But it struck me that a way could solve this problem. Share attendance gate receipts between home and away teams. I am suggesting that we go back to the old model of teams sharing their gate receipts with the away team. As used to be done in Scotland, and as is still done in the English League. If this was done, the costs for small Welsh sides like Bala, Holywell or Aberystwyth of travelling to Scotland would be easily off set by the revenue gained by playing at Glasgow Celtic or Glasgow Rangers away matches in front of excess of 40,000 fans. Clubs getting 50% of away gate receipts at Celtic and Rangers would earn hundreds of thousands of pounds per game. People might claim the old firm would not get 40,000 against small Welsh or Irish sides. But Rangers were able to get attendances of 40,000 plus when they were demoted to what is now the Scottish League Two, playing against sides that get 3 figure attendances at home. It could also attract the likes of Wrexham, Newport County, and Merthyr to join the Celtic Football League. I recognise Swansea and Cardiff either in the English Premier or one promotion away from it would not be attracted to this league. But clubs of the size of Wrexham and Newport County would bring a lot to a Celtic League. Advantages of my idea Bigger TV market for Scottish clubs to appeal to. At present Scottish football only gets big tv figures in Scotland and Northern Ireland. This system would open up the markets of Wales and the Republic of Ireland to the Scottish market. The combined audience of Scotland and Northern Ireland is around 6 million. Northern Ireland is already interested in Scottish football. But Wales and the Republic of Ireland adds a market of 6 million. Plus the Irish expat populations of England, Australia, and the USA, could be attracted by the league. The league will be bigger for Scottish clubs, but not so big a league that only Celtic and Rangers qualify for the top division. The problem with Scottish clubs joining a British League, via a merger with England, or having a European super league with even the medium sized countries with the likes of the Dutch, Portuguese and Belgians, is that teams like my favourites Aberdeen and Inverness CT would struggle to get into the top division. In fact if Inverness tried to play in an English League, on the basis of their attendances they might struggle to exit the Conference. Criticisms of my idea What about travel? My answer to that would be look at the Australian League where teams travel from Perth to New Zealand. Look at the Southern Hemisphere Rugby Union club league. Where clubs from Argentina, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand participate. Look at the Southern Hemisphere rugby championship. Look at the Russian football league, Look at Aberdeen travelling to Almaty for a Europa League game, and journeys undertaken by tennis stars. When you consider this, a trip from Inverness to Cork is nothing to cry about. Irish and Welsh league teams aren’t that big. But the Irish and Welsh clubs could grow in this system. Cork, the Dublin sides, the Belfast sides, and Newport and Wrexham are potentially big sides in terms of Scottish league football. Structure of league system A 20 team Celtic Super League of 38 games a season. The three bottom teams of each season are relegated back to their own national leagues. The Scottish League, League of Wales, and League of Ireland, and Northern Irish League continue below the league as a pyramid system. Below the Celtic Super League is the Celtic Second Division Cup played at the end of each seasons consisting of the top 2 teams from the Scottish, Irish, Welsh and League of Ireland in a 8 team play off tournament. Where there is a quarter final, a semi final, a final, and a third place play off. The finalists and the third place team are promoted at the end of each season into the Celtic Super League. The domestic cups remain, to be played between the respective clubs sides in the Celtic Super League and the respective national leagues. For instance the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup remain, with the participants the Scottish clubs in the Celtic Super League, plus all the clubs in the Scottish Football Leagues. So this benefits teams from the lower divisions in Scotland, Wales and Ireland who will still get the chance of cup football to play their nations Celtic Super League Sides. European Qualification and title of National Champions The top team in the Celtic Super League will be named Celtic Champions, but they will also be named as champions of their respective national league system. So in such, the top side in the Celtic Premier League of each nation will be proclaimed as their national champions. So for instance if the top Welsh side in the Celtic Premier League were Bangor City and they finished 7th they would still be proclaimed as Welsh champions, because no Welsh team finished above them in the Celtic League system. If the top Scottish team finish 3rd in the Celtic Premier League they will still be named as Scottish champions. The national runner up will also be declared on the same basis. European qualification will be handed out in terms of league positions in the Celtic Super League. So if the top Republic of Ireland teams finish 3rd and 6th, then the aforementioned 3rd place team would go into the champions league, and the 6th place team as Irelands top representative for the Europa League. The national cup winners will qualify for the Europa League too. Commercial Rules for trophy Domestic and international TV rights from all nations put into a pot, and shared equally between clubs regardless of nation, with a bonus going according to league position. Original Structure of League As Scotland would be putting the most into this idea. With a 50/50 shares of attendances against clubs who only get 3 figure attendances, plus massive TV rights. And enabling Irish and Welsh clubs to have massive professional teams to play against. Scotland should have an initial majority of the teams in the league. My idea is that 12 of the original teams should be from the Scottish Premier. The remaining 8 teams should be chosen on the basis that 3 from Wales, 2 from Northern Ireland and 3 from the Republic of Ireland. The Welsh teams can be chosen from the League of Wales or Welsh clubs currently in the English league system. With a cup played to enable, Welsh based, English league teams to play a qualification cup to decide who should get the 3 places in the Celtic Super League. Extra regions to join The Cornish and the Isle of Man could be asked to provide elite teams for the Celtic Super League. Maybe the Isle of Man could create an equivalent club to French tax haven Monaco. Maybe some of the English sides on the Scottish and Welsh border could enter the competition. Perhaps the big 3 North East England clubs, plus Carlisle, Shrewsbury Town, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Hereford, Chester and Tranmere could join. This could get English people interested in Celtic soccer. Song for the league The Champions League has a beautiful signature tune before every game. The signature tune before each match in the Celtic Super League could be ‘The Celts’ by Enya. merci diolch

Glasgow Celtic should play a home league game in Dublin City, to encourage more people in Ireland to support Glasgow Celtic. The game could be played outside the League of Ireland season. A Celtic Cup Cup played between Scottish, Irish, Northern Irish and Welsh teams. A British and Irish Youth Cup played between all the youth teams of the Scottish and English Premiers and a selection of Northern Ireland, Republic Of Ireland and Welsh league sides. Irish

I agree with you, playing so much isn't desirable but it shouldn't take away from this fixture. Cups like these are played across all leagues such as the Spanish Super Cup and the Community Shield. It's an important pre-season game, although mostly for fans probably
