This will work great for people just having fun, but some changes would need to be made for a serious players pit.

You said a rubber core golf ball that's wrong because rubber core golf balls have rubber bands wrapped continuously around them What you need is a cork core golf ball.

Here in England there are pubs which have a similar game - in fact, more or less identical, other than it's called 'Ring the Bull' and a Bull's head (honestly, sometimes it is, the hook in the nose!) or just a hook in the wall is used. However I have yet to find one although I do visit such establishments now and again(!) Apparently the way to play is to swing in an arc away to the left (or right) of the player, so the ring clangs onto the hook in from the side, rather than head-on. If you're REALLY clever, it goes round the pub twice... Interestingly whilst, like I say, I've never seen it in England, when visiting the States we found it twice! Once at the 'Red Hare' Brewery Marietta, Atlanta, Georgia, and on the sea-front at Fort Walton, Florida! Both times it was in use by locals who unsuccessfully were trying their skills. I did get to play 'Cornhole' for the first time, which is played in England but not commonly, unfortunately. Myself and my Godson were trashed by a couple locals, but hey, that's how you learn I guess.

I never mix dirt in with the sand. This is just asking for weeds and an impacted landing area. And you need sides and a back, not just a 2x4 level with the ground. And the stakes should angle towards each other as others have noted.

guys the stakes are supposed to be angled 12 degrees towards center of court. otherwise nice horseshoes

You didn’t use sanded plywood? No wonder the bags aren’t sliding at the end of the video. You need 20 coats of poly now.

I'll suggest a couple of improvements to make it more authentic, like the Aunt Sally I used to play in the pubs in Brackley and Bicester in Oxfordshire. This one has a passing resemblance, but with just a little more effort it will be much closer. First (and this is very important), the platform shouldn't just be at the top of the post. you should have a dogleg swinging arm. It doesn't have to be complicated... Just a bit of bent iron. If that's difficult, then just a short length of smaller pipe that slides into the top of your upright pipe. Put a right angle fitting on it, another short length, and another right angle before putting on your platform. If you hit the iron, the arm will move. This is an essential feature of the traditional game which eliminates disputes among drunkards as to whether the doll was hit cleanly. Judging from the red cups in hand, you might be able to appreciate that feature. :D The second is the doll. A 4x4 post is very well balanced, which is exactly what the doll shouldn't be. It should be a bit top heavy, and smaller at the bottom. Traditional it's a sphere on top of a truncated inverted cone, but without a lathe that could be a challenge. But it shouldn't be too much effort to use that saw to miter the bottom down to about an inch and a half. If you tap the doll with the thrown stick it should go over. Even though the traditional sticks are round, a dowel of the proper thickness is hard to find (they should be pretty hefty). The 2x2s should work well enough, but I'd strongly suggest sanding them VERY well, especially along the corners. It's pretty easy to get splinters when throwing these things with proper technique. It's a lot less fun when you're bleeding. ;) Finally, you'd normally see a sheet hung behind it. Again, it doesn't have to be fancy, but at the pub we prefer to leave chasing sticks to the dog.

Great stuff. If you hit the stand and the doll falls off it's referred to as a 'Blob' shot I believe and doesn't count. Well that's rules in England anyway! Have you tried Bat and trap? another great pub game. Whilst in the states we were introduced to 'cornhole' which we think should be WORLDWIDE!! (Fab game - played it in Marietta and Savannah, and I've no doubt it is even more wide spread) Peace and love from this side of the pond.

A few tips for those of you making this: -Check out one of your local golf courses for balls that people have left behind to save from buying them. I ended up with 50+ after a day of pitch n' putt. -I tried using dye to make both red/blue golf balls for the 2 sets of bolas but the dye didn't stay on. Use Sharpie and some kind of sealer to color them any way you want. -Parachute cord is ideal for the bolas, it comes in literally every color combo imaginable and is great for customizing your set. -If you plan on painting your ladder set make sure you sand it all down first if you want the paint to last longer. A sealer for the paint would also be great. -After you're all done making it, check out camping or lawn chair bags as a great way to store and transport your ladder golf set.
