I have the later 4000DS mk II and the even later GX-4000D which has glass ferrite heads. They are both near mint like yours. These machines are now around 50 years old and still working, sounding and looking great. I have moved up a step now and have an Akai GX-600D that takes 10 and a 1/2 inch tapes, so the 7 inch ones are mostly display pieces now.

I love reel to reel they look so cool. Do you remember the scene in Pulp Fiction with the Teac X-2000 R? I have the AKAI GX-215D. Hope you enjoy your machine.

The last word in clarity is distortion. Without it, people complain that sound is 'too clean,' or it's 'clinical' or 'analytical.' The turntable world is awash with comments about colouration, about how mechanical drives have a flavour that direct drives are missing. That's before discussions about cartridges and amps and speakers begin! I think being human we find interest in nuance, and that is found in the imperfections. You might want to have a look at the w/f though! Bit wobbly during playback ;)

I was talking with a friend about the Sony 640B reel-to -reel deck that I own needing some rehab, and how expensive it will be. He asked me if I wanted his r2r deck that he hadn't used for years. He pulled some books off a shelf above his tv cubby (built deep for a tube tv) and behind the books he had a new looking Akai 4000d. I'd still like to have the Sony rehabbed because all of the live tapes of bands I'd been in in the 70's were recorded on that deck, but I'm forever grateful to my friend who didn't need the Akai any more. I've got a Parasound phono preamp that has an A to D converter, and it also includes an additional line level input to the converter. I haven't done it yet but I want to convert the best of my band tapes into digital and get the files (or CD copies) to some of the other guys in the bands (now that we're all in our 70's).

The best sets take you on a journey deep into yourself. So much is communicated by our music. Identity, emotion, story, comfort, thrill, all laid out by the interplay of sounds. Conflict and resolution are communicated with no words. Exact solutions are never really laid out, but if you listen, the natural character of music will guide you. I found this set to be very uplifting at a time where I could really use some audio comfort for my soul. Going through some potentially very scary health things right now. I worry about leaving my wife behind early. I can listen to a set like this and walk away with a sense of a bigger picture. The outcome might not be what I want, but ultimately things will be okay, and some things will be even better than they were before danger reared it's head. Yup, I got all that out of your set.
