Tonight I found out how many Vaquitas are speculated to be left in the wild. I kid you not I bawled my eyes out like I was grieving a family member. It’s all so unfair to them💔 so now I’m trying to learn and advocate about them more. This is one of my steps, thank you for this🤍

Maybe instead of culling seals. We should cull the humans. Humans are the species that has most devistated the salmon population in the last hundred years. If we stopped over harvesting then maybe the killer whales would do better. Dont blame the seals

Isn't it a lot better to stop killing the ocean altogether??? Literally just stop buying fish.
@ookeybookey79552 жыл бұрын
I stopped eating fish because of this exact reason, by catch and ghost fishing disproportionately kills so many animals, not initially targeted.

Lets save the vaquita! Because so little people know about the vaquita, it receives much less love than other animals, I believe that the vaquita needs MORE love as there are so few left.

I would actually pay to see these animals in their natural envirement like I also paid to see for example other whales, gorila's and other wildlife and when I'm there I would definetly like a place to stay and places to eat, etc. I think I'm not alone in this. Is it possible to give those fishermen chances to earn money with ecotourism? Those people know the waters and the places where those vaquita's are best to observe and besides the vaquita there also other marine animals to see, I read almost 40% of all whale-species are found in the region. On the land around the place there is also a lot of nature to explore, so I see oppurtunities for combined organised traveling in wich you visit both Mexican and Californian part of the region.

It's just sick how so many of us treat the creatures that might like to eat some of the things we eat. If it's not thinning their numbers by a cull it's rather we just want to get rid of them altogether. If we would just stop raping the ocean of fish for 5 years we could see so many species recovering. I dare the powers that be to bring on a seal cull here in British Columbia. If they want to see you know what hit the fan then I just dare them.

Can the world not do TWO things ASAP as stop gap measures? First, take any fresh dead animal--and harvest Ova or Sperm, and take to cyrogenic condition? And second, establish some captive breeding program? Both beat extinction by a country mile. I WILL send money for either effort, and thank you for this short film. I KNOW it may be too late, and I also know the measures you talk about are right--but I mean, can we not do either or both of the things I mentioned? Let us not watch these animals pass away from life on earth.
@PorpoiseOrg5 жыл бұрын
The "Frozen Zoo Project" at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation has collected genetic material in 2017. A captive breeding program was also considered in the same year, but the effort was abandoned when a female died following capture. Ex-situ conservation is now no longer considered a viable option for this species as the risk is deemed too great and too few animals remain. The vaquita, sadly, is not the only species facing a difficult road ahead. The IUCN is listing many of their cousins as threatened, endangered or critically endangered. We are working to gather data on multiple species to make sure the vaquita's story doesn't repeat itself while nobody is watching.

@@PorpoiseOrg I'm glad to hear cryogenics has been applied; I do hope something that can be done, short and/or long term to save this, and other threatened species. To push any creature to extinction is a horrible crime, thanks for filling me in.

@PorpoiseOrg5 жыл бұрын
"They" are guessing. There is no exact number; we are relying on visual and acoustic surveys, which unfortunately only allow for a range. The latest estimates point to fewer than 19 animals, the lowest estimate in recent publications is 10.
@caspertms85435 жыл бұрын
i can't help but think that constantly having a parade of boats and ships following these last few vaquita around 24/7 is going to tremendously agitate these already stressed animals... and if there's one thing we know about vaquita (and most porpoises) it's that they do not handle stress well... and even sometimes die strictly from stress. i mean, i'm all for taking action against the illegal fishing and netting and being proactive about saving these little guys.i dont know. the situation has to be handled so delicately, obviously, who really knows what to do at this point? it's such a shame it has come down to this.
@PorpoiseOrg5 жыл бұрын
You misinterpret how visual and acoustic surveys work. Neither are vessel-based surveys conducted "24/7", nor do they "follow" porpoises around. They also don't add significantly to existing boat traffic, and there's no "parade" of boats either. Porpoises tend to be quite resilient and while they are affected by anthropogenic noise, it's not been identified as a major issue in the Sea of Cortez. There is only one major threat to this species, and it's entanglement in fishing nets. It's apart from a minimal amount of natural predation the only thing that's killing them.
