How early can I add humus to my garden before planting anything in it? It's now mid January and won't plant until February
@DaveTheHillsideGardenerКүн бұрын
I find it best to add stuff in fall or winter. That way the rain and snow etc will work the amendments into the soil for spring.

Let me share my way to soften hard shells for germination purposes. Boil water, throw in the seeds you would want to germinate and keep it in the hot water for 60 seconds then remove the seeds from the water and they are ready to be planted in soil. You don't need to peel or crack the shell. Enjoy!!

You can also eat the roots and leaves of the winged beans! The roots have a very nice nutty sweet flavor. Oh, and if you winterize the plant, it will be a perennial for you!

with Baker Creek, 30-40 packets is a regular annual or bi-annual order, lol. A lot of that is their prices/shipping, but also because I live within about 3 hours and their conditions are pretty similar, which is super helpful. Exciting to see your seeds!!! Mine should be here in the next couple days and I am so excited to start some new onion varieties.

I’ve never been that impressed with Baker Creek. The among of seeds you get in a packet is very minimal especially for the price. The company seems more interested in in keeping i up p with an image then having the best quality seeds. Don’t fall for an image. I’ve known many people that get the wrong seeds then they ordered and even diseased seeds.
@naturalwitchery10 күн бұрын
The problem with Baker Creek is that you get seeds that just aren’t true varieties. I don’t think they vet their growers thoroughly to see that they understand the distancing required to avoid cross pollination with undesired plants. I am not even sure they ask their breeders to use proper numbers of plants to avoid bottle necking the gene pool. We grew seed for them one year and were very careful as we are committed to seed genetics. That being said I’ve had seed that just WASN’T what it was supposed to be at all from them. I stick to flowers only now with them.

What seeds were effective? I haven’t had that problem yet but will watch for it. Thanks for the advice

Your plant is a Thanksgiving cactus. The points on the clades are the distinguishing features whereas a Christmas cactus, the points are rounded, and in the Easter cactus the clades are scalloped. FYI. Thanks for the wonderful info on harvesting the seed pods. I've tried that, but unfortunately, nothing grew.

Hey Dave, alot of the time with seedling citrus you will get exact clonal copies of the mother plant. Citrus often produces multiple embryos in each seed, many of which will be produced from nuceller tissue from the mother plant, effectively creating clones by seed. Others will result from pollination and could be unique. Citrus is so much fun, Have a good day.

In Puerto Rico inhave tried many local soils most kill my plants. Scotts soil always keeps them alive and thrive. Other acceptable option is schredded coconut fiber
@DaveTheHillsideGardener23 күн бұрын
What type of soil do you have? Is it possible it’s contaminated or maybe too high of a fertilizer rate that burns your plants up?
@nesq410423 күн бұрын
@DaveTheHillsideGardener the ground soil is fine, it's the store bought potting soils that are locally made in the island kill everything. They typically turn into mud when watered and harden like a rock and use a lot of wood chips/bark. I stopped using them and stuck with Scott's potting soil in the yellow bag and never the blue bag because the blue bag messes up the plants too. Otherwise shredded coconut fiber works at keeping them alive but they don't thrive like Scott's potting soil in the yellow bag regardless. I have made compost mix with my garden soil and put in pots too . Some plants love it and others don't. Usually the fruit trees do better with that solution
