I saw The Beatles at The Hollywood Bowl in ‘64 and ‘65. And in 2017, I saw Tom & The Heartbreakers at The Bowl, sitting up close where the pool and fountains used to be. This band was always so tight - sounded like the records but not - their own style as a Jam Band. They were originals. Miss ya Tom.

The Heartbreakers first two albums are some of my all time favorite records; I'm in my 60s now and I still listen to both regularly. Excellent music before they became overly commercial. I like Petty's Mudcrutch stuff also.

American Girl sounds so tame here! The tonic note that dominates the song should be ringing our ears off from Toms' guitar while Mike solos. Tell me how I'm wrong.

I'm astonished that more young people haven't heard 8:19 of TP and the HBS. it's crazy to me he's such an incredible songwriter, and there were as many as 3 award winning artists in that band!

Just one more comment the camera work is not good. It should be center stage.

It's tough headlining a funeral. I saw Tom Petty around this same time at Detroit's Cobo Arena. A year or two before Damn The Torpedoes came out launching his superstar career. I'm pretty sure he opened a show for someone else at the time, but I was really excited about seeing him because I really liked the songs American Girl and I Need To Know. He didn't disappoint that night and went on to become a legend of rock.

Imagine being 26 years old, releasing your very first album, and it contains a song that is a future classic. "American Girl" is an astonishing recording, especially considering how young and (relatively) inexperienced the band was at the time.

Remember well us squeezing into my mates front room in Dublin aged 16 to watch this. Old Bob was like a little kid with his beloved TP&TH on the show. It’s still one of the great live performances for me. The sound and energy was incredible. We had the albums but this was the first time we saw them.
