It's interesting that at the beginning of your video you say the traditional design of a camera system is poor and clunky. But yet, that's exactly the same design you would need for a Meraki setup! You still need the cam to be connected to a network so that means it still needs to connect to a switch that is connected to a network which has servers etc. You need some way to set them up and configure them. So I would assume you're going to do that on a computer that is on the same network right? Or it might be able to be done on a phone app which again needs to be on the same network I'd assume. And if you want storage, local not cloud then you're going to have to have a DVR/NVR system or software setup on a Server. So all in all, you still have the exact same design. Wow is this better??? The camera itself and it's capabilities and the cloud software I'm sure is good. I just don't get how you say one design is clunky when that's exactly how this setup would be.....

Hi David, Maybe I didn’t explain the architecture clearly enough, the key difference with Meraki cameras is how they record, encrypt and store footage on themselves as opposed to streaming to a centralised memory source. The key advantage of this is you can add/remove cameras from a site and not need to provision more or less memory at a centralised location. To your points you could have a Meraki camera powered with no network connection and it would still record and store footage on itself, however a typical installation would see the MV camera(s) networked to allow for a more seamless experience when accessing the footage stored on them. Hoping that makes sense.

Great call out, the Meraki licensing model isn’t a good fit for organisations who are looking for the absolute cheapest implementation. Meraki equipment is a better use case where simple, robust and secure deployments are sought to be implemented fast in more of a set and forget fashion.

Are all Meraki cams geared for security? Or, do they have options for conference cams?
@lockielan2 жыл бұрын
Great question, whist they could be used for streaming eg. the MV2, overall they're more purpose built for security / API integrations Eg.. Automated numberplate recognition to open a carpark boomgate
@lockielan Жыл бұрын
From what I’ve seen (and this may be outdated) Meraki cameras were more geared toward security / location monitoring. The MV2 was released with more streaming in mind but I wouldn’t recommend it for use in streaming for conferencing etc. more for someone who wants access to the Meraki API for less than the cost of other MV models.

Thank you for your clear and to the point presentation. What does it mean when we say Meraki is a cloud managed technology ? Does it mean , for example, companies don't need to hire network admins/ network engineers ? Or they still need them to manage this device on the cloud ? Thank you in advance.
@lockielan2 жыл бұрын
By cloud managed Meraki devices can be configured, managed and monitored anywhere you have an internet connection this is in contrast to how devices were traditionally configured, using a physical console cable. Network engineers are still required, they simply don’t need to physically connect to a device to configure, manage and monitor it. This is because Meraki decouples the control plane from the logic plane. The control plane is hosted in Meraki’s cloud infrastructure, securely pushing settings to edge devices via encrypted internet connection. The logic plane is hosted on physical Meraki devices within a LAN. In this way you can be more effective as a network engineer, managing multiple networks more quickly and in more depth than is otherwise possible. Hoping that makes sense!

How long does it take to renew Licencing ? Is it an easy thing to do?
@lockielan2 жыл бұрын
Hi Amie, It's straight forward to renew. Simply send a screen shot of your licensing page to your preferred Meraki Partner, requesting a quote. If you're happy to proceed with a purchase they can process this order and Meraki will email out your renewed licence details. If you don't have a preferred Meraki Partner, you can find one using Cisco's partner locator tool: locatr.cloudapps.cisco.com/WWChannels/LOCATR/openBasicSearch.do Location > Pick your location Technology > Meraki

Hi David, great call out and exactly what happens in the video. I couldn’t get access to an Umbrella SIG licence so I combined a pre-existing video and a new one for illustrative effect. Whilst this is indicative it’s not exactly what it would look like in the Meraki and Umbrella dashboards.

@lockielan2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I’m not sure exactly what you mean by PoE switch for desktop. PoE switches can output a relatively small amount of power, this is enough (depending on the exact 802.3 protocol) to power low energy devices such as access points, sensors and wireless gateways, however it’s typically not enough to power more energy intensive devices such a PCs. Meraki MS switches can schedule PoE delivery and can also sense if PoE is being used by a port. Connecting non PoE devices to an MS switch is common practice and results in no PoE power being drawn by the Non PoE device. Further detail on MS PoE behaviour is outlined here: documentation.meraki.com/MS/Other_Topics/PoE_Support_on_MS_Switches Hoping that helps!

@lockielan2 жыл бұрын
I can't comment on your exact topology without more information, however all you'd need to network multiple computers with a Meraki MS switch are ethernet cables plugged into both the switch and the computers (via the Network Interface Cards, NICs).

I didn't understand the "head connection" and branches. Why do SAAS cause bottlenecks and what is the head connection/branches?
@lockielan3 жыл бұрын
SaaS products themselves don't cause bottlenecks, it's the network design and number of users that can. The more users trying to access the internet indirectly, the more stress the local network experiences in handling these requests. In minimising the number of steps required to access a SaaS application, the latency and other QoS metrics can be improved. Hoping that's helped.
@kushol983 жыл бұрын
