But after the Revolution, France returned to the Church like almost never before. There were so many vocations that the Church didn’t know what to do with them. Rue du Bac, Lourdes, and Pontmain are examples of this.

You may find our episode on St. Jean Vianney interesting. Fr. Stephen Dominic Hayes in it made the observation: “One of the things that people do not appreciate about the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars was how systematically the Catholic Church was attacked during this entire period. One statistic I saw was that in a period of 20 years, Europe lost 90% of its religious. 9 out of 10 religious within 20 years. We’ve never experienced anything that bad.” www.faithfullpod.com/6-penance-prayers-and-an-incorrupt-heart/

All things are in degrees, but based on family who studied in France for modules on the Revolution, I can say the extermination of the Church was not a focus for them. The purging of clergy, the requirement of loyalty oaths, the execution of cloistered nuns…not a top-line fact in our experience. Hopefully this episode was illuminating for those of us who came to the full details later. God bless!

The extreme secularism of the revolutionaries is well enough known to anyone who has actually read about the French revolution. The whole revolutionary period was an orgy of destruction and violence, in the name of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. The Saints of Compiegne were a tiny subset of the thousands of clergy, religious and laity who suffered at the hands of fanatics who were later lionised by people who don't appreciate how evil the revolution was.

I thought they were already canonized years ago! As Tertulian, an early church scholar, historian, theologian once averred while watching his fellow Christians, Jews and others being slain on the bloodstained floors of the Roman Colisseum or killed on the Appian Way, "The blood of the martyrs are but the seed of the Church!" Remember when Sts Peter and Paul attempted to flee from Rome along with their sizable Christian flock and Jesus appeared to Peter heading back to where they left. "Quo vadis, Domine?" ('Where are You going, Lord?') Peter queried. And Jesus told him, "I'm going back to be crucified again!" Peter sobbed as did Paul who also beheld the vision and said, "No, Lord! Let me go in Your place instead!" Jesus told Peter, "On your return to Rome, you will be taken against your will, tortured severely and suffer the same fate as I did because I was. Be not afraid...As long as you remain faithful to Me, your reward will be far beyond price!" Paul also went alongside Peter and told the frightened flock, "If Christ be with us, who can be against us? I am certain no matter what the outcome will be, I'm truly convinced that persecution, hunger, loneliness, disease, nakedness, angels or demons, life or death, past, present, future...OR WHATEVER!! There's nothing that can separate us from the infinite, ineffible and unconditional love of God through Christ Jesus...."

@@FaithFullCatholicPodcast Thanks...and now for the other lighthearted side of me, as best described in the immortal words of St Teresa of Avila, "Deliver me from sullen-faced saints, O Lord!" I'm sure she threw that in on some of her fellow nuns in prayer...just to keep them on their toes! LOL St Paul, "Truly, my fellow brothers and sisters, we may have brought nothing into this world...and yet, brought nothing out of it!" 'Life is a cabaret, ol' chum!' as Liza Minnelli belted out in the film classic, 'Cabaret' Voltaire once said in his search for and in defense of truth in all its marvelous shapes and forms, "Indeed, I'm much fond of truth wherever I encounter it, my friend, but how I dread martyrdom...We may not always be inclined to agree to disagree, but I'm most willing to defend your cause to the death, if need be, in your absolute God-given right to say so!" You can't say Voltaire's education by the Jesuits wasn't all in vain. In the defense of the Carmelites, who suffered hardship and death by radical extremists and vice versa of an ideology of their own making gone berserk, I also think of their other confreres and sori who also had to share the Cup throughout history...and others from other religious orders and laity alike, faiths, ideals, morals and values. Their cries were never left unheard nor shall they be silenced. St Edith Stein, on the day of her arrest by the Gestapo and that of her sister Rosa, a lay helper, comforted her sister, who was obviously anxious and worried. Edith took her quietly by the and said with a smile, "Come along, Rosa, we're going for our people and being in their midst, which has been my answered prayer! Praise God!" A few years earlier, she wrote a friend how, in the cloister, how she contemplated on her fellow Jews and others who had become victims of the Nazis' so-called 'New Order' and while doing so she compared herself to Esther in the Bible, pleading her case before King Ahaserus (Xerxes) at the risk of her own life, the entire Jewish community within his empire, including her uncle Mordechai's life in her hands...And yet, as Esther, Edith knew she had a recourse to pleading her case directly from the top...the King of Kings...of whom, she added, 'is truly a great comfort to me.'

The French Revolution was a detestable and shameful period of French history. This revolution had parallels with Mao's Cultural Revolution, where his young revolutionary brigands, the Red Guards sought to destroy anything that represented the old regime. The French Revolution is a movement only championed and celebrated by Freemasons, liberal secularists, atheists, Freemasons, Communists, and Protestants. In short, every class of people who hate the Catholic Church. The dark forces that caused Luther's revolt against Christ's Church, were the very same forces which launched the French, the Bolshevik and Chinese revolutions.
