I don’t know why everyone drives jeeps to be honest definitely all paved roads. They are terribly windy however and some switchback drops. Driving there is terrible if you are used to straight regular us roads. And why do they still drive on wrong side? With left hand cars. Stupid.

When we were there, we noticed several locations including driveways that are not nicely paved. Also potholes and rough shoulder. As for the side of road, I imagine it would cost a considerable amount of time and money to convert signage and with St Thomas having ferry service changing sides would mean inconsistency. Driving on the left isn't hard. Just have to remember to keep left. Only difficult because of the US based vehicle steering wheel position.

I want to first state that we all are visitors and the road to Hana is too small for how many people drive it. IMO, local Hawaiians want to stay away from the masses so they live in the more remote regions. I understand that they get frustrated when they are coming back home, know the roads well and get held up by bob and Karen taking a photo. But as an individual, had a bad experience. 10/10 would NOT recommend taking this trip unless on a bus. Hawaii is beautiful, and I am happy that I got to witness it. I just wish less people treated each other so poorly so we could all get along and enjoy it for years to come.

And this was before road to Hana was even that bad… I am from Makawao and have lots of family in Hana, and it really pains me to see videos like this. The tourists and transplants that come to Maui these days lack the most basic respect for the locals and the land, yet they have the entitlement to demand our respect and worship, and then they all start crying when we get upset. It is unreal how terrible the tourism has become on Maui, it’s like I can’t even enjoy my own home anymore.

Absolutely. Growing up on Maui it was totally different. Even back 20 years ago there were way less tourists and transplants. The Aloha existed fully. I miss those old days

The highway 30A need to widen with two lanes on each side and a center lane for turning. Get rid of the grass on the side of the road for parking and use asphalt or concrete. This is a busy roadway and presently it is overwhelmed with traffic from tourist, residents, contractors and trucks. The widen of this road is needed and the residence want it done. The tax base for this area can pay for it.

Most the locals that live in hana are self sufficient and dont need the outside world, mainlanders like you with this mindset is why you get beat up and honked at. Entitled much? Visit, visiting, visitors, you are guest in our home act like it. You come trample on our reefs that feed our families, polute our land with your trash and then have the audacity to tell us to be civil.

Drove this route two weeks ago. There were several bike riders out that day going up and it took forever. The road is so narrow and none of them offered to pull over. We had a very similar day weather wise but extremely windy.

Very cool. My future in a couple of years when I can live on my sailboat. The now relocated Croc has me thinking about getting a diving knife/dagger. Lol. I really have enjoyed weeks living off the boat in the Keys. There is a sense of wonder and danger. Good to be that alive. Lol.
