Bone nut is pretty much completely unnecessary. Lollars are worth it though.

That’s a great job my question to you is which one do you prefer for blues and for jazz playing? Was it worth it or you think it wasn’t necessary?

Thanks! So for jazzy stuff Lollars for sure. They provide more articulate notes and dynamics. For blues I could go with either - but also depends, if you’re more a lead player probably also Lollars. The original pickups certainly have a unique sound. I just don’t find them very versatile.

Both sound good. Maybe a nice and more affordable alternative would be Fralin Modern PAFs. I just love Alnico 4 magnets.

The nut I think made a big difference in tuning stability. I replaced plastic nuts with bone on all my guitars and all of them benefited regarding tuning stability.

A digital plug in amp to test PAF’s????? Makes less than zero sense. You need a good 15-30 watt tube amp at a minimum, as when I heard the B. Buckers through any of my three tube amps, they did not sound good at all. Whereas Throbak’s sound exactly like the originals, and while painfully expensive, they’re worth it ( especially if you get them used or already installed in a guitar you got at a good price- which was the only way I could afford them). I’ve played both ‘58 and’59 LP’s, the Throbak’s sound, and FEEL, identical. Comparing these through a digital plugin is just misleading, and it seems most people have absolutely no idea what they’re listening to. As they’re not listening to what the pickups are supposed to sound like.

Sorry if I missed it - but what scratchplate have you put on it? I HATE the default (I keep clipping it with the plectrum), but I like the look of a scratchplate - although it drives me crazy clipping it all the time.

Any discernable difference could be eq ed out and certainly would never be heard in the mix. I have bb 1& 2 in my sg and say that guitar is a rock machine. In my lp I have the 59 set ( Gibson bbs)) now there's a huge difference between them. I have many guitars with sort of the same pups my strategy has Seymour Duncan 59 and jb my ect.... they all sound slightly different but I could get thought any gig with any one of them.

Wow great demo, yeah to my surprise i prefer it stock, theses things are subjective of coarse but it had a lovely fat warm tone stock, prehaps the epiphone pickups are just very underrated. This demo is certainly make me rethink upgrading my matte black casino. Cheers.

Interesting. Nicely made video. I was surprised that the burstbucker sounded so much better on the bridge plexi part (I was also quite impressed with the softube plexi plugin). Especially after hearing how much clearer the throbaks sounded on clean sounds. The burstbucker bridge must have more mids to it. The cleans were no contest though, although to be fair the throbaks aren’t wound as hot. Lastly, could you share your settings for your plexi tones? I have the UAD version I got free a long time ago but haven’t really used it. Now I’m regretting that.

Thanks for the video. Just picked up a RI LP and was super dissapointed with the BB pups. Glad I found this as it just needed a set up on the bridge and pick ups. I was shocked at how close these sound on the video. I still like the Throbaks a hair more in this video for the added detail and clarity but if I looked away from the screen I couldnt tell there was even a change. I played this over studio montitors.

I couldn’t hear a “better” difference, there was slight differences, better is subjective. Im pretty happy with stock BB’s although the custom buckers in my 335 are considerably different and I will say better and you all can fight me on that. I stand by it. I dont think throwbacks make enough difference to justify the cost. But Im also a half deaf musician and I mostly hear my ears ringing lol

Second question :) from your intro chart it says the burstbuckers 1 and 2 have the same DC resistance of 8.2 hOhm’s. I thought the rhythm pickups had less resistance than their bridge counterparts…No? I think that’s why (thanks to your awesome video!) I enjoyed the ThroBak in the neck better and the BB in the bridge :)

It's a Telecaster 50s Original from I think 2019. The pickups here were stock, but today I have the Custom Shop Nocaster pickups in them (sound closer to Julian Lage's pickups). Looks like a Nocaster, because I accidentally scratched the decal half off and decided to completely remove it.

I've been thinking of upgrading my Casino Coupe for a while now but both this and Rhett's upgrade vids have me thinking I'll take it slow and focus on the cheaper components before considering pricy pickups. The law of diminishing returns feels particularly applicable to this fine instrument.

The problem here is that a vintage style (Throbak) pickup is being played through a plugin, absolutely not ideal. Vintage pickups don't sound their best through modern amps, let alone modeling stuff and vice versa. Plug the Les Paul into a real vintage or clone Marshall Plexi through Celestion greenbacks and you'll find that the Burstbuckers are harsh, bright, and not magical. The Throbak's on the other hand are bright but not harsh and there is something a little magical about the sound that makes you want to keep playing for hours.

How exactly is the Throbak a PAF killer whne its literally a PAF clone . Its the most accurate PAF clone made today . The Burstbucker 1 and 2 are probably the least accurate PAF made today . They sound nothing like a PAF and use different materials than PAFs . It makes no sense to call Throbaks a PAF killer based on being better than Burstbuckers which are not PAFs at all.

Looks sweet! Definitely brighter and more chimey with Lollars. If you want the tone of the Epi-pickups just roll back the tone knobs. I think you would have had a bigger difference if you had gone for the the lower output Lollar 50's wind P90 - I find those beautifully open and rich in harmonics.
