The only way I'd use VC/PE/PC is to build a junior league association from the G5 to build up and promote in close association with the mother conference. Get control of the best of the rest and experiment with streaming partners (Amazon in particular). Assemble a shadow conference of the best from MW, AAC, Sunbelt, ConfUSA and MAC.

We shall see. ESPN (& SEC) needs the Big10 to play the role of landing spot available for FSU, CLEM, UNC so that they will decide to give notice of withdrawal from the ACC organically. Once notice is given, ESPN+SEC can engage actively and offer a package formally. It can also be done in the context of master settlement negotiations over the cost of their departure. ESPN will have to make assurances to all parties involved. They just did this with UT/OU, but they announced departure first.

FSU & Clemson do NOT want to play half their games in freezing axx stadiums where they are not adapted/acclimated like the host schools' athletes will always be. It makes a huge difference. (Think Dallas vs Greenbay in the icebowl; Dallas vs Philly in Philly in dead winter - it never works well for the southern based teams).

Amazon offered more money to the Big10 in their last round of media contract negotiations, but Big10 took the lower offer because of overriding factors (visibility & conventionality, certainty, familiarity - alll have their own value). So, too, might a lower offer from the SEC over a higher paying Big10 offer. SEC$ does NOT equal Big10$. Being in the SEC has a value all its own to those 2 schools, especially long term. Those schools, especially FSU, have done a lot of posturing to get SEC to overtly react. SEC is playing it coy, trying to call ESPN's bluff. ESPN needs FSU and Clemson in the SEC more than anything. ESPN needs to have the power & option to walk away from the ACC, and FSU+Clemson to the SEC creates that option. Even better would be FSU+CLEM+UNC+NCSt (or Ga Tech or KS or OkSt or WVU). ESPN simply cannot be seen as promoting this move. They need the departures to happen organically. Once the break commitment is made, they will have to move FAST to reel them into the SEC. SEC is playing it coy because they need ESPN to agree to raise their pay to more closely match the Big10 contract. They acted the same way about the 9th conference game thing. They wanted to get paid more, so they held out. ESPN will have to facilitate this in the end, but they need the schools to organically commit to leaving the ACC on their own without promises from ESPN to promote the move. If they give notice of withdrawal, then ESPN can engage. ESPN is watching Fox/Big10 dangle the carrot, but once they step out, ESPN & SEC will pounce.
@CharlesFosterMalloy2 күн бұрын
Why do you suppose ESPN has not already exercised their option to extend the ACC media agreement and locked FSU & Clemson into a longer term exposure ? ESPN is holding the exit door open for FSU and Clemson.

Learned today that the SEC feels with time UNC can get away from Nc State. The goal is now UNC/Virginia/Duke/Kansas. Part of the reason Duke is now the favorite over Nc State, is to lure Virginia in. Virginia aligns itself with high academics. Almost Ivy like. To try and make sure they get them in the SEC, they are trying to get those four together. The SEC is in no rush on time. Even if it takes years. It's what they want.

This was always coming, sooner rather than later. All they needed in discovery were the written contracts for the judge to interpret as a mixed matter of fact & law. Interpretation of a contract is a question of law for the court to make, and an MSJ is an appropriate vehicle. I've been saying this for some time now. All the lawyers knew this was coming.

I think its hilarious that Clemson is now using the ACC can backfill with anything and save the contract clause as proof that the expectation was that schools could exit and take their rights and that their exit has no impact on the conference or ESPN.

The SEC wants large flagship state universities that expand their footprint. It's why UNC/Virginia/Kansas is on their wishlist. Not to mention what those schools add to basketball. UNC will probably have to bring NC State with them, but the SEC can live with that. Duke is also going to be an option here, depending on if UNC can get out without NC State. The SEC becomes dominant in basketball as well as Football. The endowment value on those schools is large and they generate $$$$$. Kansas is already investing in football now with a brand new 460 million dollar football stadium. The BIG gets what they want and the SEC gets what they want.

As a fellow SEC fan, WHERE did all this Kansas talk come from & WHY is it only on here that I hear it?
@intoodeep71063 күн бұрын
Fans on both sides are paranoid about one gaining too much leverage over the other. So the Big Ten and SEC need to agree on the parameters on how to split the remaining value out there.

Some people are confused: Web search Q&A response excerpt: "Q: When does the new TV deal between the Southeastern Conference and ESPN start? A: It's a 10-year deal beginning in 2024-25 and concluding in 2033-34. It runs concurrently with a separate, existing 20-year agreement between ESPN and SEC that also runs through 2033-34."
@JohnDoey-vy6fo3 күн бұрын
Thanks for mentioning this, so much confusion. ESPN had the 2nd-tier rights but held more games while CBS had the first-tier game of the week + conference championship. ESPN now has the first-tier SEC/CBS rights in 2024. CBS now has the BIG in the 3:30 window with the famous SEC music (CBS owned the music) John Skipper has mentioned that ESPN usually signs similar contracts as far as expansion, we knew the big 12 allowed 4 pro-rata additions in its contract. The SEC has already added 2= Texas-OU, so SEC likely has pro-rata for 2 more not 4 more. Of course, if ESPN/SEC both want more, the contract will be amended. If I am the BIG and they indeed add Clemson/FSU, I am pivoting to the BIG 12 to grab Kansas in 2031 when the big 12 TV contract expires. I would not let the SEC grab UNC/Duke/Kansas and couple that with Kentucky. I am grabbing Kansas at 21 even if it means staying at an odd number for a contract or getting slightly less money.
