squinting =/= musical expression

Agreed, I tell my students that is called “showing emotion.” Real expression comes from the choice of voicing, the amount of stretching of tempo, the choices of where that happens, the small and the large phrases, and then how those relate to your interpretation of what that music represents. It is nuanced and highly personal as the performer, and it is often the case that listeners will have vastly different responses to the music. Some of my most simple or straightforward playing has brought people to tears, and also had people say it sounded robotic or stagnant. Other times, my most stylized playing has been called indulgent or without insight into some aspect of the music, while others thought it was the most expressive version of the piece they have heard. At the end of the day, you have to study the score and experiment with every combination of interpretations that you can imagine, and play what you feel or think is best and let the people that enjoy it come to you and remember that they don’t build statues of music critics, they build statues of the composers. :)

great job! Also, for your next piece could you try playing op. 48 no1 by chopin. I think its really beautiful piece with many emotions. The beginning of the piece is nostalgic, like an old memory. The last part is really sad, almost like shattered dreams that never came true.

This gave me a 'Fantasia' experience....for 5 minutes and 33 seconds I was sailing through the stars on a warm summer night. Magically leaving the ground...experiencing the mystical beauty of the stars above and the majesty of the Earth below...then peacefully drifting...and touching down on the Earth once more.

Loooovveee....soothes my soul. Just melancholy enough to identify with but then, somehow, by the end, I feel like I've past through the storm just in time to see the sunset on the other side.
