Thinking of changing the wheel on my B8 A5 to the B8.5 A5, did you have any issues with the paddles? Did you have to code them in afterwards? Thanks.

No problems except the nav button on the new wheel that’s used to pull up voice activation doesn’t work but everything else works well with no fault codes.

This is such a perfect guide. I will try with a compressor to clear mine. Will try adding an extension to try and get to the rear drains without having to take out the roof lining

Thanks so much, glad it has helped. If you know it is just the rear drain (leaking inside rear panel compartment) you can just remove the hood lining on that corner by undoing some things specific to that corner and pull the lining down a bit on that corner and blow it out with some compressed air.

Fantastic video. My car is a VW Passat estate (variant) but this video was still extremely useful. Those clips are a dreadful design. I struggled to remove some of them and ended up using brute force knowing that I'd have to replace some of the grab handles.

I JUST bought an 09 A4 avant and the rear compartment is full of water. Both sides by tail light and the spare tire area is soaked. With this drain issue cause it to leak in those places?
@MichaelDrowleyCars

Hi mate, Yeah I would say for sure this is a very likely cause of leaks into the rear quarter panel. Also check the rear wiper connection is still working as that can sometimes leak water into the rear quarters and finally a crack in the sunroof frame can allow water to seep in but that often also would show in the front quarters or in some cases it can drip down onto the front seats or soak the mid-console.

Finally, a competent DIY for the B8 avant with the pano moonroof. Dealing with the same issue right now, just got my headliner out and this video would've helped a lot. Thankfully I'm replacing it with the black headliner so I didn't have to worry about my old one, but getting the new one in will still be a pain...

25 subs but the most complete guide how to do it... nice :D You also should consider to get plastic trim tools - they are nice to avoid any damages like on the fwd airbag sign.

Thanks for the advice on using plastic trim tools. Let’s hope there isn’t a next time… but probably will be when I have to redo headliner eventually

Thank you for the great videos. I also have a leak coming from the rear of the sunroof. Is there a way to pull down the headliner to check the drain attachment without removing as much of the trim?

I’m not sure of a way to do that without removing the c pillars that are the pillars next to the passenger seat backs. Perhaps you could avoid removing all the front elements like sun visors, front grab handles, front courtesy light, front mid console with sunroof and light controls… but the c pillars and b pillars (next to the drivers seats that house the seatbelt height adjusters) would need to come down as well to avoid having to bend the headliner over the tops of those which kinda press into the headliner with a channel that’s in the top of the pillars.

Missed your comment sorry. I think quite possibly it could work but you have to match up the B8.5 airbag with you currently have. Some of the B8s have single stage and later model ones or s line steering wheels have 2 stage with 2 connectors. The single and double stage are not interchangeable.

24:32 little tip on these “oh shit” handles: I struggled with these as I reinstalled them pre-Part 2. When I removed them I fully removed the inner plastic clip. After a few failed attempts I discovered that you need to preload the plastic clip (partially) into the handle AND THEN insert the handle to the upper frame. Click the handle in and then you can depress the pre-installed plastic clip to secure the handle

I put mine all back together but may take it all apart again just to perform the “block the drains with claybar and test the sunroof track” test. I may not be able to rest until I know for certain I have addresses the problem! 😅

I also think, maybe if it still leaks, then replace the seal around the glass as there might be too much water getting past it into the track and overpowering the tracks ability to drain fast enough - spilling it over into the wind deflector spring area.

My issue was at the same point - where the drain tube meets the sunroof at the top. HOWEVER… mine seemed to be gummed up ABOVE the connection - in the plastic part that leads directly to the sunroof. I poked a pipe cleaner up there and that is what released the water for me. I suspect it was blocked by a combination of excess sunroof lubricant, dirt and time.

@GHHodges I thought mine was the same too but it turned out to be a blocked rear drain - right at the top of the drain was gummed up so probing from the rear wheel well did nothing to fix it. Good news is it hasn’t leaked since but there also hasn’t been a huge downpour yet. But in part 2 I block the front and rear drains off to test the frame with standing water and the frame didn’t leak.
@GlenHHodges

@@MichaelDrowleyCars That s EXACTLY what I found on mine! (Sorry… I couldn’t wait for Part 2 and started poking around on my own). I removed the drain tube at the top and then poked a pipe cleaner I the most upper portion. Water started flowing out. If I overwhelm the system with water it will leak at the frame (cassette) but it will now accept a very steady flow of water and divert it through the drain tube. We get A LOT of rain in the Pacific Northwest ( about 1.6 m per year) so it will not be long before my alleged fix gets out to the test. Parking on my sloping driveway only adds to the problem.

You need to see if your steering wheel has single stage or dual stage airbag first. Mine was original s line steering wheel with tip tronic so had the newer stage 2 airbag and same part number with just an earlier last letter. New circular airbag had same number for the first 9 digits and was a direct replacement and thankfully no fault codes.

My old wheel airbag 2 stage - 8K0 880 201 E, new one was 8R0 880 201 Q. So correction to the above was second letter of part number was also different - K in old airbag part number to R in the new airbag pn. Hope that helps mate
